Abstract

By the time of its completion in 1621, the former Jesuit church in Antwerp counted amoung the most brilliant artistic achievements of the Southern Netherlands. From the start too, its fame was associated with the name of Rubens. His contribution to the project in terms of painting - the series of ceiling paintings and the two great altarpieces - is well known, and has been treated in earlier volumes in the Corpus Rubenianum. Yet, from the seventeenth century to the present day, the precise extent of the artist's involvement in the architecture and the architectural sculpture of the church has been a point of discussion. Rubens was in close contact with the Jesuit François de Aguilón, designer of the ground plan of the Antwerp Jesuit church, and with lay brother Pieter Huyssens who made most of the drawings for the church. Known to be by Rubens's hand are a limited number of drawings and an oil sketch for architectural ornaments and sculptures that relate both to the exterior and to the interior of the structure. Despite numerous campaigns of restoration, especially after the disastrous fire of 1718, the iconographic scheme of the church is, even today, clearly influenced by Rubens's distinctive visual language which takes inspiration both from classical antiquity and from its Christian interpretation in early Baroque churches in Rome. Some of the church's decorative designs were also modelled after works by contemporary Italian artists such as Cherubino Alberti. This volume presents a full discussion of the evidence about Rubens's contribution to the church and features a critical catalogue of the design drawings and oil sketches attributed to the artist. Also considered is the way in which several of these drawings and sketches later served as models not only for religious but for secular architectural decoration, including that for the entry into Antwerp of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in 1635.
