Research on occasions and forms of private representation in art from the close of Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages has so far been carried out rarely and not very systematically. This volume presents the proceedings of an international conference held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2013. His contributions were devoted to private portraits between Late Antiquity and Byzantium on very different groups of monuments and on aspects in a broad diachronic and methodological perspective. Forschungen zu Anlässen und Formen privater Darstellungen in der Kunst vom Ausgang der Antike bis zum Ende des Mittelalters sind bislang selten und wenig systematisch durchgeführt worden. Dieser Band legt die Akten einer 2013 an der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften abgehaltenen internationalen Tagung vor. Seine Beiträge widmeten sich dem Privatporträt zwischen Spätantike und Byzanz auf ganz unterschiedlichen Monumentengruppen und zu Aspekten in weiter diachronischer und methodischer Perspektive.

This book offers new insights into the Memorial of Moses on Mount Nebo, one of the most renowned coenobitic monasteries in the Byzantine period in Arabia. Starting from the archaeological data, the author critically reflects on the architectural phases of the basilica, the management and daily life in the monastery. Special attention is also given to pilgrimages to the monastic shrines beyond the River Jordan and their progressive abandonment. Dieses Buch bietet neue Einblicke in die Memorialkirche für Mose auf dem Berg Nebo, einem der bekanntesten coenobitischen Klöster der byzantinischen Zeit in Arabien. Ausgehend von den archäologischen Daten reflektiert der Autor kritisch die architektonischen Phasen der Basilika sowie die Verwaltung und das tägliche Leben im Kloster. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auch auf Pilgerfahrten zu den Klosterheiligtümern jenseits des Jordan und auf deren fortschreitende Aufgabe gelegt.

Better known to Western medieval travelers as Zayton, Quanzhou in Fujian was China's main port and also the terminus of the maritime Silk Road. The city was home to a cosmopolitan population especially when China was under Mongol rule (ca. 1280-1368 CE). Italian visitors to and inhabitants of the city included Marco Polo, Odoric of Pordenone and Andrew of Perugia. The city had a significant Christian population, both Catholic and Church of the East (Nestorian), and the nearby town of Jinjiang has to this day in its neighbourhood a Manichaean shrine housing a unique statue of Mani as the Buddha of Light. These religious communities left a wealth of art on stone which first came to light in the mid-twentieth century but is still very little known and studied outside China. This volume containing over 200 illustrations (many in full colour) is the work of a team of scholars from Australian universities in collaboration with the major museums in Quanzhou and Jinjiang and is the first major work on this unique material in a Western language.
