Abstract

This volume is a collection of new essays by art historians from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United States dedicated to shedding new light on the complex historical interrelationship between functions and decorations within architectural settings. It concentrates on the historical context of works of art, that is their ritual embedding in liturgy, ceremony and habit. The authors thereby focus on a particularly rewarding object, namely the Vatican Palace as it appeared between the 13th and the 16th century. The contributions consider various aspects: the Vatican's medieval textile decorations, the impact of ceremonial concerns on architectural form, the relationship between music and ceremony, Pinturicchio's and Raphael's wall paintings in the papal apartments, the decorations of the Cappella Paolina and the Sala Regia, the history of the Vatican Library, and also methodological questions concerning the history of functions of art.

Abstract

The volume analyses the Early Christian decoration of the ancient St. Peter in Vatican and St. Paul outside the walls basilicas, judged two of the most important Roman shrines in Late Antiquity. Both of the buildings, built in different periods of the fourth century, are known in the main structure and in the primary characteristics, but many doubts remain about the inside adornments realized around their construction. Through an integrated system of written and figurative sources, whose most part dates back to the seventeenth and eighteenth century, it is possible to presume the appearance the two buildings had before their destruction, happened in different moments and dissimilar ways. A peculiar characteristic of both the buildings was the presence of frescoed cycles focused on the Old and New Testament stories that decorated the lateral walls of the main aisle. The research specifically examines these figurative narrations, identifying similarities in subject and development of the Old Testament stories and highlighting the differences that characterized the New Testament cycles, to get to formulate some new hypotheses about the time of creation and the reasons that led a discrepancy in the themes dedicated to the New Testament cycles."
