On considère principalement les théâtres classiques d'Asie sous l'angle de la scène. Les formes mises en jeu répondent à des techniques, relativement codifiées, que l'on pourrait considérer comme des écritures, des " écritures scéniques ". Il ne faut pas omettre pour autant que ces théâtres sont sous-tendus par des textes, qui supportent l'entrelacement des expressions comme une trame soutient une broderie, des " écritures textuelles ". La richesse de leurs langages dramatiques apparaît dans les analyses des pièces indiennes, chinoises et japonaises présentées dans ce livre. Ce langage est différent de notre langage dramatique, n'étant pas passé par le pli aristotélicien. Sa spécificité nous invite à une réflexion sur l'écriture théâtrale et son fonctionnement dans des cultures différentes des nôtres. Comment pense-t-on " autrement " le texte théâtral, quelles pensées se développent autour du théâtre en Asie ? Le voyage n'est pas différent de celui auquel nous conviait Roland Barthes au début de "L'Empire des signes", dans le chapitre "La langue inconnue" : " défaire notre réel sous l'effet d'autres découpages, d'autres syntaxes ; découvrir des positions inouïes du sujet dans l'énonciation, déplacer sa topologie en un mot. descendre dans l'intraduisible, en éprouver ici secousse sans jamais l 'amortir: jusqu'à ce qu'en nous tout l'Occident s'ébranle et que vacillent les droits de la langue paternelle, celle qui nous vient de nos pères et qui nous fait, à notre tour, pères et propriétaires d'une culture que précisément l'histoire transforme en nature ".
