La Chine a toujours exercé une attirance particulière sur les autres pays du globe. Au cours du seizième siècle, les sciences nautiques et la témérité des grands explorateurs ont fini par donner une impulsion nouvelle et puissante aux rapports entre l'Europe et la Chine. Suivant le sillage des Portugais, Espagnols, Français et Néerlandais, les Flamands ont assumé au cours du xviiie siècle un rôle important dans les échanges commerciaux avec la Chine. L'art d'exportation chinois représente sans doute l'un des aspects les plus précieux de ces échanges commerciaux à l'échelle mondiale. Les objets importés de Chine étaient réalisés dans des matériaux inconnus en Europe et décorés de sujets étrangers à nos régions. Ils étaient reçus avec enthousiasme et exerçaient une influence considérable sur la mode et la décoration intérieure. Imbibant les coutumes de ce temps, les objets exotiques d'origine chinoise ont engendré une fascination qui perdure encore de nos jours et dont bien des châteaux et maisons de maître de nos contrées recèlent des exemples splendides. Les collections comprennent des meubles, des éventails, des papiers peints et toutes sortes d'objets en porcelaine, soie, laque, ivoire et argent, des richesses inégalées qui se trouvent maintenant réunies en une exposition prestigieuse.
