Abstract

Health and Education in Early Childhood presents conceptual issues, research findings, and program and policy implications in promoting well-being in health and education in the first five years of life. Leading researchers in the multidisciplinary fields of early learning and human capital formation explore the themes of the integration of health and education in promoting young children's well-being; the timing of influences on child development; and the focus on multiple levels of strategies to promote healthy early development. Through this, a unique framework is provided to better understand how early childhood health and education predictors and interventions contribute to well-being at individual, family community, and societal levels and to policy development. Key topics addressed in the chapters include nutritional status, parenting, cognitive development and school readiness, conduct problems and antisocial behavior, obesity, and well-being in later childhood and adulthood.

Abstract

The key to preventing many adult diseases lies in childhood, when lifetime patterns of diet, exercise, and moderation are most often set. Authored by an interdisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, and researchers, this book provides a research-based examination of the interplay between health and behavior in childhood and adolescence leading to either positive or negative health outcomes. It examines issues such as: What role does temperament play in at-risk behavior? How can we improve dietary choices? How can we reduce the cycle of physical inactivity leading to ob

Abstract

The goal of this book is to explore the ways in which health behavior develops in childhood, in the context of childhood socialization processes. The book reviews the historical and contemporary perspectives utilized in portraying the dynamics of children's physical health, a developmental analysis of children's and parents' attitudes and behavior concerning children's health, the role of parents, schools, and the media in influencing children's health attitudes and behavior, and how health attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes are affected by the social ecology of children's rearing environments.

Abstract

Before a separate Department of Medical Humanities was formed, the editors of this volume were faculty members of the Department of Pediatrics at our medical school. Colleagues daily spoke of the moral and social problems of children's health care. Our offices were near the examining rooms where children had their bone-marrow procedures done. Since this is a painful test, we often heard them cry. The hospital floor where the sickest children stayed was also nearby. The physicians, nurses, and social workers believed that children's health care needs were not being met and that more could and should be done. Fewer resources are available for a child than for an adult with a comparable illness, they said. These experiences prompted us to prepare this volume and to ask whether children do get their fair share of the health care dollar. Since the question "What kind of health care do we owe to our children?" is complex, responses should be rooted in many disciplines. These include philosophy, law, public policy and, of course, the health professions. Representing all of these disciplines, contributors to this volume reflect on moral and social issues in children's health care. The last hundred years have brought great changes in health care tor children. The specialty of pediatrics developed during this period, and with it, a new group of advocates for children's health care. Women's suffrage gave a political boost to the recognition of children's special health needs.
