Abstract

Abstract

While there are general texts on telemedicine and guidelines on the use of telemedicine in pediatrics, there are no texts focused specifically on the provision of health care to adolescents and young adults using telemedicine. Adolescents and young adults have more unique health care needs than both adults and children, including the need to receive developmentally appropriate services and care that may be provided in settings outside of the standard clinical office (such as school-based care). In addition, in most US states, adolescents are capable of providing consent for some but not all medical care, highlighting the critical importance of providing services in a manner that adheres to regulations around consent and confidentiality. Telemedicine for Adolescent and Young Adult Health Care offers readers case-based content written by experts in the fields of adolescent medicine and telemedicine. There are a variety of chapters that include an emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion and will include local and federal rules, regulations, and considerations for ensuring privacy in the modern electronic health record. The first chapter offers a general overview and history of telemedicine. The next one focuses on telemedicine and epidemics. The chapters in the middle detail a variety of topics related to telemedicine such as confidentiality, equity, telemedicine and learners, school-based care, telemedicine in primary care and ambulatory consultative care. The book closes out by emphasizing additional populations such as youth involved in the juvenile carcel system, homeless/housing insecure, foster involved youth and youth with developmental delay. It is a valuable resource for adolescent medicine specialists, pediatricians, primary care physicians and any other professional who treats the adolescent population.

Abstract

Treatment of pediatric obesity, to date, has largely focused on lifestyle therapy. While lifestyle therapy is essential for obesity management, it is often insufficient, particularly for youth who have severe forms of the disease. Underlying the limitations of lifestyle therapy is the recognition that obesity is a biological disorder of the energy regulatory system and accordingly, to effectively manage obesity, the underpinning pathophysiology needs to be addressed. This pathophysiology can be targeted with more advanced therapies including anti-obesity medications and metabolic and bariatric surgery, two treatment strategies supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Written by leading experts in the field, A Practical Guide to Managing Pediatric Obesity is comprised of thirteen chapters, each including suggested protocols and case examples. The first chapter details the complex pathophysiology of obesity and sets the stage for why advanced therapies are critical for effective obesity management. Chapter two provides guidance on best practices for communicating with patients and families about obesity. The next three chapters provide direction on how to do a comprehensive patient assessment, and employ dietary and physical activity interventions. The heart of this guidebook is the chapter on pharmacological treatments, which details the mechanisms of action, research results, and recommendations for anti-obesity medication selection and monitoring outlined in a step-by-step fashion. Pre- and post-operative care for the pediatric bariatric surgery patient is detailed in the next chapter. Assessment and management of behavioral and psychological complications, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are covered in the subsequent five chapters. Syndromic and monogenic obesity are discussed in the final chapter.

Abstract

Abstract

This book focuses on the impact of social stigma on adolescents who are at high risk of teen pregnancy. It describes and discusses personal and social factors that predispose them to becoming pregnant and having babies; factors that may subsequently protect or more often, compromise outcomes for both parents and children. The authors, who represent a range of social roles and perspectives, describe the pathways from stigma and its unfounded beliefs about disadvantaged adolescents, to the ways stress burdens teen parents and their children. They note that successful teen parents often go unrecognized and wonder how many more are hobbled by stigma. They recognize the lifespan impacts of stress as described in the ACE studies; stress that has psychological, health and economic implications at individual and social levels. They examine the impact of stigma on parent-child relationships and the attachment system, a stress management system, learned in infancy and persisting into adulthood. The book describes how stigma finds its way into daily interpersonal encounters, systemic policies and practices, and even into healthcare research and services. This sets the stage for an in-depth look at attachment systems within stress management, interventions, and recommendations for professionals whose work is impacted by these issues. Written by experts in the field, this text is the first to cover the current understanding of the risk factors, advanced understanding of developmental issues, and the key intervention tactics for the most positive outcome for adolescent parents and their families. Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting is an excellent resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, social workers, educators, researchers, and policy makers working with youths at risk for teenage pregnancies.

Abstract

This edited volume brings together interdisciplinary scholarship on children’s everyday leisure from across the globe, addressing key questions around children’s agency, rights, child-adult relations, and social change. It is positioned to inaugurate a new frontier of research within leisure studies. Leisure theory has historically been adult-centric and based in the global north, and consequently, children’s lived experiences of leisure have remained marginal to theory-building exercises within leisure studies since its inception. As the call for decolonizing leisure studies grows, this book champions a cross-cultural and social justice agenda that does not privilege global north childhoods but acknowledges the multiplicity of lived childhoods across the globe and their inter-connections. By drawing attention to children’s leisure – across multiple genres such as organized leisure, sports, play, and digital leisure among others, this edited volume drives a new wave of research that speaks simultaneously to leisure studies and childhood studies and thereby advances the intellectual remit of global leisure studies. Abstract

This book provides a scientific and practical guide for training and supervision in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It builds on more general fundamentals of clinical supervision with a theory-driven approach backed by empirical support for training and supervising clinicians in the practice of CBT. The book dispels the myth of “do it, teach it” as it relates to supervision and addresses the importance of recognizing that one size does not fit all with CBT supervision. The volume synthesizes CBT research on supervision and links it to the practice of supervision. It reviews components of supervision that warrant consideration (e.g., therapeutic alliance, ethics), specific settings (e.g., medical setting, schools) and clients (e.g., culture, individual, group, disability, and high-risk). In addition, it addresses a neglected area of developing competency, including developmental models as well as measuring trainee and supervisor competency in the provision of clinical supervision. The book recommends future directions on how to integrate technology into supervision to enhance the quality of supervision and, ultimately, client outcome. Key areas of coverage include: Major constructs in CBT supervision and training. Supervising work with various clients, including individuals, children, adolescents, families, and couples. Supervision and high-risk cases. Teaching and supervision within a behavioral medicine context. Issues of diversity, technology, and ethics of supervision. The Handbook of Training and Supervision in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an is an essential resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians, therapists, and other professionals in clinical and school psychology, pediatrics, social work, developmental psychology, behavioral therapy/rehabilitation, child and adolescent psychiatry, nursing, and special education.

Abstract

This book examines the five primary areas of the Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS). It describes COMPASS as an evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) versus an evidence-based practice (EBP) and discusses how it informs innovative individualized education program (IEP) goal setting., planning, and implementation through teacher coaching. In addition, the book introduces the common elements necessary for improved teaching plan quality and child goal attainment in maximizing educational outcomes. It also describes the extension of COMPASS to transition-age high school students with autism as well as the integration of current research findings from NIH-funded studies for transition-age youth and professional development and training. Finally, the book explores innovative methods to support the consistent implementation and expansion of COMPASS across school, home, and community settings. It discusses how to integrate classroomwide performance assessment to identify students in need of the focused instruction that COMPASS provides. Key areas of coverage include: Identifying personalized goals and intervention strategies (i.e., EBPs) using an EBPP framework within COMPASS for students with autism. Advances in measurement of IEP quality for transition-age autistic youth Integration of accessible online educational materials necessary to implement COMPASS feasibly when implemented by school consultants and autism trainers Lessons learned from professional development and training of community-based autism school consultants for developing high quality intervention plans. COMPASS IEP goal attainment and fidelity outcomes with face-to-face, telecoaching, and electronic feedback. COMPASS and Innovative Education for Students with Autism is an invaluable resource for educators, clinicians, scientist-practitioners, and therapists as well as researchers, professors, and graduate students in the fields of child and school psychology, behavioral therapy, and social work as well as rehabilitation, special education, speech pathology, and all interrelated disciplines.
