Comment Sébastien Castellion, traducteur honni par les Réformés comme par les Catholiques, crée-t-il une langue et un style particuliers pour traduire la Bible à l’intention des plus simples ? C’est la question centrale de cet ouvrage de Carine Skupien Dekens, coéditrice de la Genèse de Castellion (2003). Convaincu que l’Esprit Saint « laisse la liberté des mots et de la langue à l’orateur ou à l’écrivain », Castellion a cherché à exploiter toutes les possibilités de la syntaxe française, encore malléable au XVIe siècle, pour modeler une langue « entendible aux idiots ». Après avoir montré comment le traducteur se représentait ses destinataires, cette étude situe cette traduction dans le contexte linguistique complexe de la France du XVIe siècle. L’analyse de la syntaxe française permet de comprendre comment Castellion a adapté au simple peuple, auquel il s’adresse, sa grammaire et son style. On voit alors apparaître une langue dans laquelle la syntaxe est au service d’un style aisément compréhensible mais savamment construit.
