"This manual describes simple tests for evaluating the condition of built heritage and cultural monuments. The tests were selected for their simplicity and widespread availability, especially in countries where few institutions deal with the conservation of important buildings or monuments and where laboratories capable of the necessary analyses are scarce. Most tests can be carried out without the resources of a complete conservation laboratory. Methods include microscopy, ion test strips, the Scotch Tape test, RILEM tube water absorption, water vapor transmission, and three tests that can be run sequentially-capillary water absorption coefficient, total immersion, and evaporation curves. Some of these tests aid in the examination of building materials and the characterization of salts and other condition problems, which will help to determine the appropriate methods and materials for conservation and restoration"-- Provided by publisher.

Classes with a special emphasis (so-called profile classes) represent a central element of current school development processes and are considered as one of the most prominent ways of practical implementation of school autonomy. At the secondary level, profile classes in music and science (music and STEM classes) are becoming increasingly popular. Specific features of profile classes (including additional lessons, innovative and practice-based teaching and learning formats, and the involvement of student labs) are associated with various pedagogical potentials - especially in terms of fostering students' interest and their self-concept. However, there is a research gap regarding the development of students' subject-related interests and their self-concept in profile classes at the secondary level. The findings of the present study indicate differences in the development of the interests in music and science as well as the domain-specific self-concept between music classes, STEM classes and classes without a specific profile. Using cross-lagged-panel-models, the longitudinal relations among interest and self-concept are estimated in addition to the correlations of the constructs within each wave and the autoregressive effects within each construct over time. In this regard, differences in the cross-lagged panel models between profile classes and classes without a specific profile are examined. The results allow an evaluation of the potential of profile classes in order to promote students' interest and self-concept and offer a variety of implications for pedagogical practice.

The Bruges-born poet-priest Guido Gezelle (1830–1899) is generally considered one of the masters of nineteenth-century European lyric poetry. At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezelle was hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modernFlemish poetry. His unique voice was belatedly recognised in the Netherlandsand often compared with his English contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889).In this bilingual anthology, award-winning translator Paul Vincent selects a representative picture of Gezelle’s output, from devotional through narrative, to celebratory and expressionistic. Gezelle’s favourite themes are childhood, the Flemish landscape, friendship, nature, religion and the Flemish vernacular, and his apparently simple poems conceal a sophisticated prosody and a dialogue with spiritual and literary tradition.

The first major study of one of the most influential periodicals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuriesProvides the first major study of one of the most influential periodicals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuriesInterrogates and revises critical commonplaces and narratives about form, authorship, reading and gender through rigorous archival research on the magazine's authors, readers, printers and publishersMaps new directions in eighteenth-century and Romantic studies, women's writing, and media and cultural history by modelling innovative and interdisciplinary methodologies for historical periodical studiesMoves the women's magazine from the periphery to the centre of eighteenth-century and Romantic print cultureIn December 1840, Charlotte Brontë wrote in a letter to Hartley Coleridge that she wished 'with all [her] heart' that she 'had been born in time to contribute to the Lady's magazine'. Nearly two centuries later, the cultural and literary importance of a monthly publication that for six decades championed women's reading and women's writing has yet to be documented. This book offers the first sustained account of The Lady's Magazine. Across six chapters devoted to the publication's eclectic and evolving contents, as well as its readers and contributors, The Lady's Magazine (1770-1832) and the Making of Literary History illuminates the periodical's achievements and influence, and reveals what this vital period of literary history looks like when we see it anew through the lens of one of its most long-lived and popular publications.

Examining Russia-EU relations in terms of the forms and types of power tools they use, this book argues that the deteriorating relations between Russia and the EU lie in the deep differences in their preferences for the international status quo. These different approaches, combined with economic interdependence and geographic proximity, means both parties experience significant difficulties in shaping strategy and formulating agendas with regards to each other. The Russian leadership is well aware of the EU's "authority orientation" but fails to reliably predict foreign policy at the EU level, whilst the EU realizes Russia's "coercive orientation" in general, but cannot predict when and where coercive tools will be used next. Russia is gradually realizing the importance of authority, while the EU sees the necessity of coercion tools for coping with certain challenges. The learning process is ongoing but the basic distinction remains unchanged and so their approaches cannot be reconciled as long as both actors exist in their current form. Using a theoretical framework and case studies including Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine, Busygina examines the possibilities and constraints that arise when the "power of authority" and the "power of coercion" interact with each other, and how this interaction affects third parties.
