Abstract

Catechols are widely found in nature taking part in a variety of biological functions, ranging from the aqueous adhesion of marine organisms to the storage of transition metal ions. Catechol-based natural and biomimetic molecules have thus been the focus of intense research aimed at mimicking and translating this nature-inspired chemistry into new functional materials and systems with tailored properties. The aim of this book is to present a concise survey of the state-of-the-art of basic and applied research on bioinspired catechol systems. It collects several cutting-edge contributions from leading laboratories with a unifying theme of biomimetic principles and approaches. It is hoped that both practitioners and newcomers to the field will by fascinated by the unique potential of biomimetics to pursue new research and innovative solutions in biomedicine and technology.

Abstract

Oral contraceptives for family planning worldwide have revolutionized the reproductive lives of millions of women since their introduction in the 1960's. Later on, a variety of side-effects including cardiovascular diseases was recognized. In response to these concerns, new generations of combined oral contraceptives were developed that featured lower dose of estrogen and newer, more potent progestogens. The effectiveness and ease of use of combined hormonal contraceptives suggest that they will continue to be used to a significant extent in the future. This ninety-first volume of IARC Monographs

Abstract

Mucoadhesive polymers are widely used in the design of dosage forms for transmucosal drug delivery to the eye, respiratory, gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts. These routes of drug administration offer a number of advantages including improved drug bioavailability, reduced frequency of administration, and the avoidance for the use of injections.

Abstract

Nanoparticles and nanostructured materials represent an active area of research and impact in many application fields. The recent progress obtained in the synthesis of nanomaterials, and the fundamental understanding of their properties, has driven significant advances for their technological applications. The Special Issue “Functional Nanostructures for Sensors, Optoelectronic Devices and Drug Delivery” aims to provide an overview of the current research activities in the field of nanostructured materials with a particular emphasis on their potential applications for sensors, optoelectronic devices and biomedical systems. The Special Issue includes submission of original research articles and comprehensive reviews that demonstrated or summarized significant advances in the above-mentioned research fields. The Special Issue is made up of fifteen original research articles and three comprehensive reviews covering various topics of nanostructured materials and relative characterization from fundamental research to technological applications. More than 100 scientists from universities and research institutions lent their expertize and shared their research activities to ensure the success of this Special Issue.
