Cities have long been both central sites for capital accumulation as well as key spaces for utopian thinking. Yet, the intensified global conflict over the city's streets in recent decades has once again raised the question of who controls access to public space. Is it the fanciers and developers or the people who shape everyday life in the metropolis? In Rebel Cities, David Harvey places the city at the heart of both capital and class struggles, looking at locations ranging from Johannesburg to Mumbai, from New York City to São Paulo. Drawing on sources from the Paris Commune to Occupy Wall Street and the London Riots, Harvey asks how cities might be reorganized in more socially just and ecologically friendly ways - and how they can become central to anticapitalist resistance.
