Abstract

This book explores discursive psychological empirical research in the context of political communication. Drawing together a well-established field of study and a variety of discursive psychology approaches the authors confront the theoretical and practical challenges that discursive psychology and political communication studies face today. Using a diverse range of approaches, including the analysis of TV shows, cartoons, social media groups and blogs, face-to-face verbal interaction, political rhetoric and mainstream news reports, the authors explain the ways in which discursive psychology can offer insight into the nature of contemporary political communications. The book offers timely and international reflections on the context of online political communication, Brexit rhetoric, prejudice discourse and political persuasion, showcasing the analytical acumen and empirical insight that can be gleaned from discursive psychology methods. Political Communication: Discursive Perspectives highlights the value of contributions from outside English speaking academia and is essential reading for academics, researchers and students interested in political communication or discursive psychology. Mirko A. Demasi is a lecturer in psychology at York St John University, UK. His current research interest is in the study of political debates on the European Union in the context of Brexit, constructions of truth and factuality as rhetorical and moral concerns, contested political discourse and the study of racist discourse in Finland and beyond. Shani Burke is a senior lecturer in psychology at Teesside University, UK. Her research interests are applying discursive psychology to Islamophobic and far-right discourse, focusing on how potentially prejudicial arguments are presented as ‘reasonable’. Her work has been published in a range of journals, such as Discourse and Society and the Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology. Cristian Tileagă is Reader in Social Psychology in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Loughborough University, UK. He has written extensively on discursive psychology, prejudice and discrimination, collective memory, and interdisciplinarity. He is the author of a number of books, including Discursive Psychology: Classic and Contemporary Issues (2015, with Elizabeth Stokoe) and The Nature of Prejudice: Society, Discrimination and Moral Exclusion (2016). .

Abstract

"Discursive psychology has proved exceptionally fruitful in showing us how people use talk to do "psychological" things like remember, recognise, judge, and so on. Now we have a collection which goes one major step forward, and shows us how they do those things - and more - using gesture, movement and bodily orientation. A hugely welcome contribution to our understanding of psychology in everyday life." - Charles Antaki, Professor of Language and Social Psychology, Loughborough University, UK For over thirty years, discursive psychology has offered a robust challenge to cognitivist approaches to psychology, demonstrating the relevance of discursive practices for understanding psychological topics and social interaction. Matters of embodiment – the visceral, sensory, physical aspects of psychology – have, however, so far received much less attention. This book is the first text to address the theoretical and analytical challenges raised by bodies in interaction for discursive psychology. The book brings together international experts, each of which tackles a different topic area and interactional setting to examine embodiment as a social object. The authors consider the issue of subject-object relations and how ‘inner’ psychological subject-side states are constructed and enacted in relation to object-side states through embodied discursive practices. How do bodily processes become particular kinds of embodiment through and within social interaction? How are bodies psychologised as social objects? Moving beyond dualisms of the subject/object that construct an ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ psychological state, the book pushes forward contemporary theory and analysis within discursive psychology. Discursive Psychology and Embodiment is therefore an essential resource for researchers across the social sciences working within discourse, social interaction, and the ‘turn to the body’. Sally Wiggins is Associate Professor in Psychology at Linköping University, Sweden. Her research interests focus on eating practices in everyday social interaction, and she has previously authored a textbook entitled Discursive Psychology, and has published numerous empirical articles and book chapters on discursive psychology. Karin Osvaldsson Cromdal is Associate Professor in Social Work at Linköping University, Sweden. She has published on identities and social interaction in primarily institutional settings such as detention homes for troubled youth, helpline and emergency rescue service interaction, and social work counselling. .

Abstract

This book brings together mobilities and possibility studies by arguing that the possible emerges in our experience in and through acts of movement : physical, social and symbolic. The basic premise that mobility begets possibility is supported with evidence covering a wide range of geographic and temporal scales. First, in relation to the evolution of our species and the considerable impact of mobility on the emergence and spread of prehistoric innovations; second, considering the circulation of people, things and creative ideas throughout history; third, in view of migrations that define an individual life course and its numerous (im)possibilities; and fourth, in the ‘inner’, psychological movements specific for our wandering – and wondering – minds. This is not, however, a romantic account of how more mobility is always better or leads to increased creativity and innovation. After all, movement can fail in opening up new possibilities, and innovations can cause harm or reduce our agency. And yet, at an ontological level, the fact remains that it is only by moving from one position to another that we develop novel perspectives on the world and find alternative ways of acting and being. At this foundational level, mobilities engender possibilities and the latter, in turn, fuel new mobilities. This interplay, examined throughout the book, should be of interest for researchers and practitioners working on mobility, migration, creativity, innovation, cultural diffusion, life course approaches and, more generally, on the possibilities embedded in mobile lives. Vlad Petre Glăveanu is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Professional Counselling at Webster University Geneva. He is Associate Professor II at the Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE) at the University of Bergen, Norway, and Director of the Webster Center for Creativity and Innovation (WCCI). .
