Remembered as the official who failed to keep Luther in the Catholic fold, Tommaso de Vio, Cardinal Cajetan (1469-1534) was a multi-faceted figure whose significance extends beyond those days in Augsburg. In the 1520s, he embarked on a labour of biblical commentary that occupied the final decade of his life, producing over a million words of translation and commentary. Offering an overview of this remarkable body of work, Michael O’Connor argues that Cajetan’s motive was the renewal of Christian living (more ‘Catholic Reform’ than ‘Counter-Reformation’), and that his method was a bold and fresh hybrid of scholasticism and Renaissance humanism, correcting the Vulgate’s errors and expounding the text almost exclusively according to the literal sense.

The sale of indulgences is considered to be the starting point of Martin Luther's Reformation. On the basis of the indulgence instructions the present book devotes its first part to the vagueness and inconsistencies of the indulgence as it was seen by Cardinal Cajetan, the leading Roman theologian in the time of Luther. It then deals with the dispute between Cajetan and Luther's writings. In its third part the book reaches out as far as the year 1522, when Cajetan, commenting on the Summa of Thomas Aquina, gives his final opinion on the indulgence. Presenting the theological confrontations on the indulgence, due attention is given to the conflict which had the greatest impact on the early Reformation time.

Who is Jesus Christ? The question is one of the central problems of Christian theology. This publication deals with the reflections, the Dominican theologian and Luther-Inquisitor Thomas de Vio Cajetan (†1534) has given as an answer in the early modern conflicting of scholasticism, humanism and reformation. After clarifying the most important philosophical notions, Cajetan's understanding of the incarnation, the union of God and man in Jesus Christ, Christ's human nature and the biblical dates of Christ's life are investigated. This volume gives a significant theological view of the state of christological theory-building at that time. The sections on the concept of persona and Christ's being are of interest to the historian of philosophy as well.
