Abstract

This book focuses on the geometry creation techniques for use in finite element analysis. Examples are provided as a sequence of fin designs with progressively increasing complexity. A fin was selected as it is a feature widely employed for thermal management. As the content progresses, the reader learns to create or import a geometry into a FEM tool using COMSOL Multiphysics® . The fundamentals may also be applied to other commercial packages such as ANSYS® or Abaqus TM . The content can be utilised in a variety of engineering disciplines including mechanical, aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, and electrical. The book provides an overview of the tools available to create and interact with the geometry. It also takes a broader look on the world of geometry, showing how geometry is a fundamental part of nature and how it is interconnected with the world around us. Features: Includes example models that enable the reader to implement conceptual material in practical scenarios with broad industrial applications Provides geometry modeling examples created with built in features of COMSOL Multiphysics® v. 5.4 or imported from other dedicated CAD tools Presents meshing examples and provides practical advice on mesh generation Includes companion files with models and custom applications created with COMSOL Multiphysics® Application Builder.

Abstract

In nuclear fusion technology, thermal-hydraulics is a key discipline employed in the design phase of the systems and components to demonstrate performance, and to ensure the reliability and their efficient and economical operation. ITER is in charge of investigating the transients of the engineering systems; this included safety analysis. The thermal-hydraulics is required for the design and analysis of the cooling and ancillary systems such as the blanket, the divertor, the cryogenic, and the balance of plant systems, as well as the tritium carrier, extraction and recovery systems. This Special Issue collects and documents the recent scientific advancements which include, but are not limited to: thermal-hydraulic analyses of systems and components, including magneto-hydrodynamics; safety investigations of systems and components; numerical models and code development and application; codes coupling methodology; code assessment and validation, including benchmarks; experimental infrastructures design and operation; experimental campaigns and investigations; scaling issue in experiments.

Abstract

This book is a collection of recent publications from researchers all over the globe in the broad area of high-voltage engineering. The presented research papers cover both experimental and simulation studies, with a focus on topics related to insulation monitoring using state-of-the-art sensors and advanced machine learning algorithms. Special attention was given in the Special Issue to partial discharge monitoring as one of the most important techniques in insulation condition assessment. Moreover, this Special Issue contains several articles which focus on different modeling techniques that help researchers to better evaluate the condition of insulation systems. Different power system assets are addressed in this book, including transformers, outdoor insulators, underground cables, and gas-insulated substations.
