This master thesis starts with environmental and economic observations. The first thing is that using timber construction systems is an excellent way to reduce the environmental impact of the construction sector. More than one house out of ten is built in timber in Belgium, and the number of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) constructions is constantly increasing. The second thing is that the environmental impact is not the only matter for people aiming to build a house. Economic concerns are usually a top priority. In this context, a widespread belief concerning timber construction is the origin of this thesis. It seems like people have this idea that CLT construction for residential buildings is way more expensive than stud-wall construction (which is the most used timber technique in Belgium). However, finding scientific studies proving that statement is quite complex. It appears that there is a lack of literature concerning the subject. Therefore, the aim of the thesis is to run an economic comparison of two construction technologies for residential buildings: stud-wall construction and CLT system. The financial comparison is made through a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis which is regulated by the ISO 15-686 standard. The costs that are evaluated include investment and periodic costs. The first ones represent the construction budget (materials, workforce), and the second ones correspond to the costs occurring during the life cycle of the building (energy fees, maintenance budget). The LCC analysis is made on a real reference building (stud-wall construction) and a CLT alternative. The case study used in this thesis is a single-family passive house built with a stud-wall structure. It is representative of Belgian timber dwellings. The CLT alternative is defined with information coming from literature and discussion with experts. Only the wall configurations are changed. All other parameters are equal to those of the reference building. This way, the economic comparison concerns only the structure of the house, as intended. The LCC is run on a 50 years lifespan. The results of the study prove that the construction of a house is more expensive with a CLT system than with a stud-wall structure. However, the study shows that there is only a 7 % difference between the two LCC. This is explained by the excellent energetic properties of the CLT system that leads to annual energy savings. Over decades, these annual economies make a significant difference.

Cross laminated timber (CLT) is a plate-like multi layer element with crosswise arrangement of lamellas. CLT could be used for long-span beams in particular with tensile stresses perpendicular to the beam axis. Within this work, CLT beams were optimised, resulting in diagonal orientated timber (DLT). Both CLT and DLT beams were tested in edgewise bending. Their load-carrying behaviour was studied using experimental results and finite element analysis.

This book advances a much-needed and transformational agenda for making architecture today through a close reading of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and its material unit, the CLT blank. Both matter-of-fact and multivalent, economical and excessive, the blank has untapped potential for experimentation, innovation, and research in architecture at various scales. Blank brings together texts and work from a wide range of theorists and practitioners who make CLT central to their inquiry and, in turn, suggest design approaches that broaden the material's cultural, spatial, and technological significance for architecture, education, engineering, and industry. The book claims new conceptual territory for a material with extensive appeal whose theorization has been stuck in narratives of its sustainability. Slippages between art, architecture, and science help position Blank as an antidote to current conversations about CLT, which are fixated on its mass production and carbon footprint, portraying it as a bland product rather than an enabler of design. The book argues for the material's aesthetic and spatial potential, conjuring the kind of world that CLT can create. Striking visuals contribute to repositioning CLT architecture though new forms of representation and design responses that continue to stay in touch with pragmatics.

Exceptional design loads on buildings and structures may have different causes, including high-strain natural hazards, man-made attacks and accidents, and extreme operational conditions. All of these aspects can be critical for specific structural typologies and/or materials that are particularly sensitive. Dedicated and refined methods are thus required for design, analysis, and maintenance under structures’ expected lifetimes. Major challenges are related to the structural typology and material properties. Further issues are related to the need for the mitigation or retrofitting of existing structures, or from the optimal and safe design of innovative materials/systems. Finally, in some cases, no design recommendations are available, and thus experimental investigations can have a key role in the overall process. For this SI, we have invited scientists to focus on the recent advancements and trends in the sustainable design of high-performance buildings and structures. Special attention has been given to materials and systems, but also to buildings and infrastructures that can be subjected to extreme design loads. This can be the case of exceptional natural events or unfavorable ambient conditions. The assessment of hazard and risk associated with structures and civil infrastructure systems is important for the preservation and protection of built environments. New procedures, methods, and more precise rules for safety design and the protection of sustainable structures are, however, needed.
