Arguing that the consecrated body in the Eucharist is one of the central metaphors structuring The Divine Comedy, this book is the first comprehensive exploration of the theme of transubstantiation across Dante's epic poem. Drawing attention first to the historical and theological tensions inherent in ideas of transubstantiation that rippled through Western culture up to the early fourteenth century, Sheila Nayar engages in a Eucharistic reading of both the "flesh" allusions and "metamorphosis" motifs that thread through the entirety of Dante's poem. From the cannibalistic resonances of the Ugolino episode in the Inferno to the Corpus Christi-like procession seminal to Purgatory, Nayar demonstrates how these sacrifice- and Host-related metaphors, allusions, and tropes lead directly and intentionally to the Comedy's final vision, that of the Eucharist itself. Arguing that the final revelation in Paradise is analogically "the Bread of Life," Nayar brings to the fore Christ's centrality (as sacrament) to The Divine Comedy-a reading that is certain to alter current-day thinking about Dante's poem.

De la naissance à la mort, nous sentons et nous expérimentons que nous sommes incarnés. Nous venons au monde et nous le quittons en éprouvant le poids de notre incarnation. Si nos sentiments, nos passions, nos pulsions nous le font reconnaître de manière certaine, notre incarnation n'en reste pas moins pour nous un mystère. Le plus originairement mien est en même temps le plus étrangement autre. Qu'en est-il au juste de ma condition incarnée ? Que signifie-t-elle et à quoi m'assigne-t-elle ? Le paradoxe éclairé par la philosophie de Maître Eckhart pose la notion d'incarnation comme un défi pour la raison philosophique, aussi bien d'un point de vue métaphysique que d'un point de vue moral. Unissant corps et âme sans les confondre, Maître Eckhart intègre ainsi tout l'homme à l'économie du salut divin. Cette chair vivante n'est donc pas disjointe de mon âme, et avec elle de ma liberté humaine. A rebours de tout dualisme, le philosophe médiéval ouvre au lecteur du XXIe siècle la possibilité de penser nouvellement l'incarnation de l'homme (phénoménologie) à partir de l'Incarnation du Verbe (théologie).

Dans l’histoire du corps en Occident, une réflexion particulière est accordée à l’invention du corps chrétien. Un corps de chair, qui deviendra dès les débuts du christianisme le lieu privilégié des institutions du pouvoir, des pratiques, des discours et des croyances. D’un côté, « le corps est l’abominable vêtement de l’âme », dit Grégoire le Grand, mais, d’un autre côté, « le corps est le tabernacle du Saint Esprit », écrit saint Paul. À la différence des traditions hellénistiques, platoniciennes surtout et stoïciennes, qui opposent l’âme et le corps et qui ne voient dans le corps qu’une prison de l’âme ou son tombeau, le corps chrétien invente la chair comme un lieu paradoxal de division, de rupture, de chute et en même temps d’unité, de réparation et de salut. L’invention du corps chrétien, c’est l’invention des liens entre le corps et l’histoire, la chair et le temps, pour l’écriture d’une histoire du corps en Occident. Trois thèmes sont au cœur de ce livre : les antinomies de la chair, les apparitions de la chair, les destinées de la chair.

Theologians and Old Testament scholars have been at odds with respect to the best interpretation of the imago Dei. Theologians have preferred substantialistic (e.g., image as soul or mind) or relational interpretations (e.g., image as relational personhood) and Old Testament scholars have preferred functional interpretations (e.g., image as kingly dominion). The disagreements revolve around a number of exegetical questions. How do we best read Genesis 1 in its literary, historical, and cultural contexts? How should it be read theologically? How should we read Genesis 1 as a canonical text? This book charts a path through these disagreements by offering a dogmatically coherent and exegetically sound canonical interpretation of the image of God. Peterson argues that the fundamental claim of Genesis 1:26–28 is that humanity is created to image God actively in the world. “Made in the image of God” is an identity claim. As such, it tells us about humanity’s relationship with God and the rest of creation, what humanity does in the world, and what humanity is to become. Understanding the imago Dei as human identity has the further advantage of illuminating humanity’s ontology.Canonically, knowledge of the contours and purpose of human existence develops alongside God’s self-revelation. Tracing this development, Peterson demonstrates the coherence of the OT and NT texts that refer to the image of God. In the NT, Jesus Christ is understood as the realization of God’s image in the world and therefore the fulfillment of the description of humanity’s identity in Genesis 1. In addition to its specific focus on resolving interdisciplinary tensions for Christian interpretation of the imago Dei, the argument of the book has important implications for ethics, the doctrine of sin, and the doctrine of revelation.
