Abstract

Industrial engineers increasingly make use of microprocessors to monitor and control industrial processes. This book provides a comprehensive account of how CAN (controller area network) can be designed and applied in a wide variety of industrial settings. It covers thoroughly: CAN chip implementations, CAN chip programming, CAN hardware design, CAN system testing and wiring, and CAN applications. The author is a widely recognized expert in this technology with extensive experience in these techniques with companies ranging from Intel, Motorola, and IBM through to Volkswagen and Bosch. He brings to bear his expertise by providing examples of industrial newtorks from industries such as textiles, elevators, milling machines, excavators, and dental chairs. Beginning with the basic theory of industrial control systems, th book provides simple examples of networked systems. Then stepwise, readers are shown how to apply CAN systems and how to test them. As a result, electronic engineers working with industrial control systems will find this an important book to own.

Abstract

Modern vehicles use Electronic Control Units (ECU),connected via Controller Area Network (CAN) to performfunctions. Many of these functions are distributed acrossseveral ECUs. This network interconnection enables thesharing of sensors, calculated information and actuators. As new functionality is added, the number of ECUs andtheir complexity increase. This paper describes the values and possibilities of aHardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) based Integration Lab,which enables a wide range of automatic tests to beperformed on networked ECUs. The Integration Lab is the complex rebuild of a Scaniatruck/bus, containing the ECU superset, for connectingand testing networked ECUs. It involves more than 30ECUs and eleven CAN networks.

Abstract

The increase in the number of electronic control units (ECUs)in the modern vehicle, combined with increased softwarecomplexity and more distributed controls has led to anextreme testing challenge when it comes to the verificationand validation of body-control ECUs. In general testengineers have to deal with more software configurations, more closed-loop interaction between ECUs, and more faultconditions than ever before. By adding Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS) over CAN to aHardware-In-The-Loop (HIL) test system, Lear was able toincrease test automation and provide wider test coverage byautomating the ECU flashing process, adding diagnosticidentifiers and trouble codes to their test scripts, andproviding a quick and easy way to exercise ECU I/O. Lear chose to implement their HIL testers on the open PXI[1]hardware platform, utilizing National Instruments' VeriStandsoftware framework. A main reason for selecting NIVeriStand was the ability to add custom functionality usingNI LabVIEW, allowing Lear to integrate hardware frommultiple vendors and add support for UDS (ISO-14229.1) This paper will discuss in detail the process for automatingECU flashing and including diagnostic data for morecomprehensive test scripts, as well as the implementation ofthe Unified Diagnostic Services via the AutomotiveDiagnostic Command Set for LabVIEW.

Abstract

Modern vehicles have electronic control units (ECUs) to control various subsystems such as the engine, brakes, steering, air conditioning, and infotainment. These ECUs (or simply 'controllers') are networked together to share information, and output directly measured and calculated data to each other. This in-vehicle network is a data goldmine for improved maintenance, measuring vehicle performance and its subsystems, fleet management, warranty and legal issues, reliability, durability, and accident reconstruction. The focus of Data Acquisition from HD Vehicles Using J1939 CAN Bus is to guide the reader on how to acquire and correctly interpret data from the in-vehicle network of heavy-duty (HD) vehicles. The reader will learn how to convert messages to scaled engineering parameters, and how to determine the available parameters on HD vehicles, along with their accuracy and update rate. Written by two specialists in this field, Richard (Rick) P. Walter and Eric P. Walter, principals at HEM Data, located in the United States, the book provides a unique road map for the data acquisition user. The authors give a clear and concise description of the CAN protocol plus a review of all 19 parts of the SAE International J1939 standard family. Pertinent standards are illuminated with tables, graphs and examples. Practical applications covered are calculating fuel economy, duty cycle analysis, and capturing intermittent faults. A comparison is made of various diagnostic approaches including OBD-II, HD-OBD and World Wide Harmonized (WWH) OBD. Data Acquisition from HD Vehicles Using J1939 CAN Bus is a must-have reference for those interested to acquire data effectively from the SAE J1939 equipped vehicles.

Abstract

Due to tougher legislation on exhaust emissionsreduction and the consumer demand for more power andmobility and less fuel consumption, the functionality intoday's engine management systems continues to grow. The electronic engine control units (ECUs) have toperform more control tasks using new sensors andactuators, along with the corresponding self-diagnostics(OBD, on-board diagnosis). All this leads to continuously increasing demands onautomated hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test systems. HILtechnology has advanced in parallel to the ECUs, and istoday an indispensable tool for developing automotiveelectronics. This paper therefore aims to provide a comprehensiveand state-of-the-art survey of HIL testsystems for engine controllers. First of all, a brief introduction to the ECU's functionalityis given. Then the sensor and actuator interfaces aredescribed in detail together with the correspondinginterfaces of the HIL simulator, and both hardware andsoftware aspects are discussed. There follows adescription of the real-time engine simulation modelswhich are needed to close the control loop between theECU and the HIL simulator. Finally, some typical HILsystem configurations are shown to demonstrate today'sbreadth of applications. The last section looks at futuredevelopment steps in HIL technology, necessitated bythe current enhancements to ECUs.

Abstract

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing is used bycommercial vehicle original equipment manufacturers(OEMs) in several fields of electronics development. HILtests are a part of the standard development process forengine and machine control systems. For electroniccontrol units (ECUs), not only the HIL test of thehardware but also the controller software validation isvery important. For hardware diagnostics validation, adynamic simulation of the real system could be omittedand an open-loop test of the controller is sufficient inmost cases. For most controller software validationincluding OBD (on-board diagnosis) tests, detailed butreal-time capable models have to be used. This article describes the needs and challenges ofmodels in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) based testing, taking into account the wide range of commercial andoff-highway vehicles. Starting with the commonalitiesand differences in applications it lists the modelrequirements and different approaches in modeling forclosed-loop HIL testing to help to find the most suitablemodels for the HIL application. Finally a comparison oftesting and development between HIL and other testingareas is provided.
