First commissioned by Bishop Gerard I of Cambrai (1012-1051) in 1023 or 1024, the Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium was the work of two authors, the second of whom completed the text shortly after the death of Bishop Gerard. The three books of the Gesta shed considerable light on the policies and actions of many of the key political and religious figures in an economically and intellectually vibrant region on the frontier between the German and French kingdoms. The Deeds of the Bishops of Cambrai, translated in this volume into English for the first time, provides unique insights into the relationship between the German king and the bishops within the context of the so-called imperial church system, the rise of both secular and ecclesiastical territorial lordships, the conduct of war, the cult of the saints, monastic reform, and evolving conceptions of the proper social order of society. Including extensive commentary, apparatus of explanatory notes, maps, genealogies, this text will be of considerable value both in undergraduate and graduate courses as well as to scholars.

out à la fois office administratif et tribunal du for interne, sacramentel ou non sacramentel, la Pénitencerie apostolique a connu une intense activité dès le bas moyen âge. Son travail s’appuyait sur le droit canon. Agissant en qualité de mandataire, le cardinal pénitencier répondait aux suppliques adressés au pape par des clercs et des laïcs sollicitant dispenses, absolutions, « licences » spéciales, « déclarations » d’innocence. De ces suppliques, agréées et signées par le « grand pénitencier », on tint note, à partir de la première moitié du XVe siècle, dans des registres propres à la Pénitencerie. Le dépouillement du premier registre (Penitenzieria Ap., Reg. Matrim. et Div., 1), le seul conservé pour la période du Grand Schisme, a permis de relever 156 de ces suppliques pour les diocèses de Cambrai, Liège, Thérouanne et Tournai pendant une partie des pontificats d’Alexandre V et Jean XXIII, les deux papes de la courte lignée issue du concile de Pise de 1409. L’historien peut ainsi disposer de matériaux nouveaux, d’une grande utilité, pour une histoire essentiellement religieuse et sociale dans le cadre chronologique et géographique considéré.

Door grensoverschrijdende uitwisselingen floreerde de katholieke drukpers in de kerkprovincie Kamerijk in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw als nooit tevoren. De kerkprovincie ontstond in 1559 en verenigde de Franstalige gewesten in het zuiden van de Habsburgse Nederlanden, vandaag verspreid over Frankrijk en België. Grenzend aan de Kanaalkust, Frankrijk en het Heilig Roomse Rijk, was de regio een grens- en doorreisgebied tussen de Britse Eilanden, Frankrijk, de Nederlanden en Duitstalige landen. Door haar centrale ligging en als vroeg bolwerk van de katholieke hervorming ontpopte ze zich ook tot een aantrekkelijk vluchtoord voor katholieken uit omliggende streken. Aan de hand van de methode van de transregionale geschiedenis onderzoekt dit boek het aandeel van grensoverschrijdende contacten, mobiliteit en transfers in de ontwikkeling van een uiterst productieve en innovatieve religieuze boekproductie. De kerkprovincie Kamerijk treedt daarbij naar voren als een gebied met een onverwacht centrale positie in de uitwisseling van katholieke teksten in het vroegmoderne Europa.
