La complexité de l'architecture cranio-faciale explique la multiplicité des analyses céphalométriques, trop souvent fondées sur des points sans justification phylogénétique, ontogénétique, anatomique ou biomécanique. L'intérêt d'une analyse fiable et rapide conçue à partir de bases fondamentales indiscutables est essentielle. Elle permet l'utilisation de la céphalométrie dans la pratique quotidienne des orthodontistes, chirurgiens maxillo-faciaux et des chirurgiens plasticiens de la face. Cette analyse céphalométrique fonctionnelle et esthétique est réalisée à partir de quatorze points anatomiques, dix points osseux et quatre points cutanés, qui ont en commun d'être tous exo-basicrâniens. Cette analyse est facile à assimiler et à exploiter. Elle ne demande que cinq minutes pour être apprise et cinq minutes pour être tracée (quinze secondes si elle est informatisée). Les résultats qui en découlent sont fiables.

Jusqu'à ce jour, on ne s'est pas suffisamment préoccupé de la base crânienne qui, à notre estime, est déterminante dans l'établissement de l'occlusion.Une dysharmonie occlusale signale une dysharmonie basicrânienne ; toute la difficulté est bien d'en dépister les premiers signes au plus tard à l'installation de la mastication vers 2 ans ½.Changer la forme et le rapport des arcades en denture lactéale, c'est modifier la balance mandibulaire et le jeu des forces de la mastication. For a wide spectrum of scientists from biomedical and dental researchers to primatologists and physical anthropologists, Emet Schneiderman offers the most accurate and up-to-date presentation of the normal growth of the lower facial skeleton in a primate species. His study is based on a sample of thirty-five captive rhesus monkeys, whose facial growth was traced over a ten-year period spanning from infancy to adulthood. The author identifies the relative contribution of various sites of growth, quantifies the relative roles of different types of development--such as appositional and condylar--and sheds light on several long-standing controversies as to how the primate face grows. Unlike many of the traditional cephalometric measurements, the ones included in this work were chosen to reflect the positional, dimensional, and localized remodeling changes that occur during ontogeny. Using a new statistical approach designed for longitudinal data, Schneiderman avoids the misleading information that has often resulted from older, cross-sectional statistical methods.
