De la sphère de l'intime à la sphère des affaires, cet ouvrage propose d'analyser les trajectoires ascensionnelles de commerçantes mauritaniennes devenues businesswomen. De Nouakchott aux comptoirs chinois, de Paris à Dubaï, ces commerçantes transnationales font des affaires. Ajustant et réajustant leurs connexions, ces importatrices « en gros » de marchandises variées (meubles, vêtements, matériel audiovisuel, vaisselle) servent avec pragmatisme leurs intérêts économiques. En véritables big women, elles disposent de compétences relationnelles au sein de la classe politico-économique, des compétences parfois spécifiquement féminines puisque certaines sont passées maîtresses dans l'art de transformer leur capital beauté en capital social et financier. Stratèges individuelles, elles jouent avec les représentations collectives, instrumentalisent les discours communautaristes – comme le tribalisme et le régionalisme – et accaparent avec succès les politiques de promotion féminine. Ainsi propulsées dans l'élite politico-commerciale – pour laquelle la richesse, le luxe et la consommation ostentatoire ouvrent à de nouvelles hiérarchies sociales – ces femmes donnent en spectacle et diffusent un nouveau mode de vie, celui des gens qui ont réussi. Du local au global, leur succès professionnel répond à des dynamiques qui allient savoir-faire, calculs rationnels et heureux opportunismes. Ces femmes incarnent aujourd'hui la réussite en Mauritanie.
