Abstract

For some years now a new technology was being developed: adaptive optics. It helps overcoming the drawbacks of atmospheric turbulence on observations obtained by professional ground-based telescopes. Not only will astronomers be able to gaze more distant objects, but they will also see more specific details of closer objects. For the time being, adaptive optics is a technology only reserved for telescopes having a primary mirror diameter above six meters. Systems are relatively expensive and there is still a strong culture for the Do-It-Yourself.This suggests that there is a role for some integrating activities. Therefore, upgrading its current offer might be a good opportunity for AMOS to get a sustainable competitive advantage. The company could have attempted to penetrate two new markets: optical communications or space surveillance. However, after having examined their attractiveness according to the business strengths, it has proven more suitable to focus our efforts on the astronomy market segment. In this case, we are going to try to convince Scientific Institutes, Universities, and Observatories that they can rely on AMOS for a brand-new telescope with AO or for upgrading their existing facilities with this device. It provides a cost-effective solution, innovative, and personalized according to customers’ requirements.AMOS’ expertise in telescopes is internationally recognized. The company masters all the vertical integration: from the design to the on-site installation and verification, but we have no experience with regard to the manufacturing of AO components. Consequently, it will position itself as the systems integrator and will benefit from the know-how of actors who are already established.Even if this new business model requires significant investments in research and development and marketing during the first years, it has been proven to be very profitable. With a net present value equals to more than €4 million and an internal rate of return of 52%, our model is definitely worth it. Moreover it is part of a truly ethical and sustainable development approach.

Abstract

Recent years have seen a growing interest in animal wellbeing. People tend to care more and more with the wellbeing of their companions. For many, a cat or a dog deserves to live well, and it would be a shame not to give them the best care possible. That passion now extends to others animals, previously considered as farm animals such as rabbits, guinea pig or even hens. This work focuses on the last, the hens, previously reduced to farm animals to provide eggs and eat the household leftovers. Hens are now, in many households, part of their pet family. People now keep hens not only for their eggs, but also for the life they bring to the garden. As such, they care about their health and their wellbeing. Meanwhile, people aspire to less mental load, less things to care. Nevertheless, a hen is a vulnerable animal and demands a strict daily workload. One needs to check if it is securely in the chicken coop for the night and close it so that it is sheltered from predators.Recent years have seen huge technological advances in the digital world. With everybody carrying a smartphone, staying connected has become an habit . The long-awaited smart houses are now a reality, with many people controlling their lights, door locking system, alarms, home appliances, etc. Anything with electrical power can now technically be controlled or monitored from a smartphone. This thesis aims to explore the possibly to build a business around the warranty of hens wellbeing and protection without adding mental load for their holders.

Abstract

This document goes through the different steps of the project from the birth of its idea until its development, that aims at the elaboration of a food order and delivery company from local businesses from short supply chains. It consists in validating the project by scientific studies on the one hand, and by consumers via a field survey on the other hand. The goal of this work is to explore the feasibility of the creation of the company in order to define the necessary foundations for a future business plan. This study aims at walking the reader through the different stages of the development of the idea by means of various tools. The literature review confirms the project from a theorical point of view while the market analysis verifies the idea in the field. A consumer survey has been distributed in this context and interviews with local actors have been conducted. Moreover, the market study is completed by a PESTEL analysis in order to understand the opportunities and threats the company is exposed to a global level. Finally, in order to approach the local market, a competition analysis according to the Five Forces model of PORTER is carried out.The results obtained from the scientific articles and from the market study are then transcribed in the Business Model Canvas (BMC) in order to get a business model in a pictorial way. Finally, a roadmap is carried out to list tasks that need to be realized and to be delegated. Those make it possible to draw up a business plan which will enable to make the project concrete and to launch the business on the market.

Abstract

The reason why GCP Consulting creates Atlas Solutions was at first to improve the effectiveness of its fiduciary but after the will has grown to want to commercialize the product to other accounting offices in order to guarantee a regular income for the company. Atlas is a software for dematerialization and automatic encoding of accounting documents developed by GCP. The mission entrusted to me was to define the commercial strategy for this tool. At first, I had no idea of what the market of the accounting profession was but after various researches and a quantitative analysis, I was able to learn more about it and I was able to notice that it was a market that was evolving with the emergence of new technologies. In addition to the understanding of the market, the understanding of the Atlas tool was an important element in the project because I was able to realize beyond its technical aspects that it could be difficult to set up this kind of software even if it has many advantages. The changes that Atlas induces in the work process of the fiduciary are a barrier that can be neglected. Indeed, one of the biggest difficulties in this project was to convince the fiduciaries about the need of digitize their process because I had realized that the profession of accountant is a profession in which there is a strong “paper culture” and that it is strongly attached to its work habits.I had enough information to determine the different elements of the Business Model Canvas in order to create a commercial strategy that would be set up for Atlas service. I believe it is essential to adopt a service marketing strategy to ensure that GC Partner positions itself as competitively as possible. The essential element of this strategy is, of course, the value proposition of Atlas that allows highlighting its various advantages. The business plan enabled us to find the break-even point and to set the objectives that had to be reached in order to generate profits.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to understand the particularities of the business model used by start-up in the insurance sector. During the various chapters, the reader will be able to discover a sector that is at the gateway to a transformation of its current functioning. Forced to adapt to new disruptive elements, insurers as we know them find it difficult to be as reactive as start-ups. These disruptive elements are supported by the development of technology and artificial intelligence. Can we develop an effective insurance business model in Belgium? What can Machine Learning models bring? These are the questions we will ask when we observe different innovative players in the market. During this thesis, we will study what new technological models bring to the different levels of the insurance value chain. This thesis also gives a complete description of a new phenomenon in the insurance sector: Peer-to-Peer insurance. Part of this study focuses on the classification of these new types of insurance and examines their benefits. This detailed overview is then accompanied by an analysis of the disruptive elements that lead to the emergence of new business models. The central element of this transformation concerning technology, this thesis attaches great importance to it. First of all, the theoretical aspects of Machine Learning were studied and secondly, the practical application led to the development of an analysis of a Business Model Canvas.

Abstract

Due to the rising awareness about Islam, the Muslim community experienced a constant increase over the last years. Therefore, the demand for Halal products and services is growing in tandem with the growth of the Muslim population around the world. In South-Asia regions, many governments have successfully implemented standards for Halal products. However, with the worldwide growth that Halal is facing, the lack of one global Halal standard for certification and accreditation is getting urgent. The different Halal standards between countries are confusing and lead to misunderstanding. "Due to this non-uniformity in the application of Halal standards, Halal certification became the subject of different personal interpretation which mostly result in confusion and scepticism in consumers' behavior towards reliability of Halal products and services" (Dugonjic, 2015).To understand how the Halal Certification System works, this thesis provides a literature review explaining the concept of Halal, the different segments composing it and the Integrity of the Halal Supply Chain. As a concrete example, The Halal Certification Process in Indonesia has been detailed out. With the help of the Business Model Canvas, the purpose of this research is to define the key elements of the Halal Certification Process. Moreover, with the analysis of 19 Halal Certification websites and 16 Halal Standard documents, this research paper has the goal to measure Halal Certification Bodies' performance and subsequently conclude a benchmark. The result, which is the General Map, gives the structure of an ideal Halal certification website. Additionally, a grid of evaluation has been established to measure the external performance of Certification Bodies' Website. This grid will provide a rating classifying them from the most relevant to the less. Finally, this research exposes the current debates around the status of Halal standard and compares the Indonesian Halal Assurance System with the well-known ISO standards. The result explains that Halal fits well with ISO, and this is why the current proposal for a new technical committee on Halal within ISO is a positive initiative. Without one global Halal standard which is recognized and accepted worldwide, the Halal industry will never be able to achieve its full potential and thus, continue to grow as steadily as it does now.

Abstract

Short food supply chains (SFSCs) seem to be growing fast, including in Wallonia. These local food systems bring social and environmental proximity back into fashion, while they had been heavily affected by intensive agriculture and the growth of mass retailing. However, most people are still using mass distribution. In this context, we might question what the future could bring for SFSCs and how they could attract more customers. This report aims at answering these questions by studying a Namur-based food cooperative, Paysans-Artisans, which sells products from local farmers and artisans supporting sustainable agriculture. Throughout a complete business analysis based on its actual business model, its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities could be assessed. Amongst them we can highlight the global lack of SFSCs awareness, although it is a fast growing market. Paysans-Artisans’ distribution channels seem too restricted and prevent more customers from accessing it. Hence a unique and very limited customer segment is targeted. Two Business Model Canvas were then designed to answer these findings. The first one is focused on developing a B2B wholesaler service. The second one is aimed at building a “short food supply chains hub” in Namur, including a local grocery shop. These business models could help respond to customers’ needs while promoting SFSCs fundamental values and ideology.
