Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot founded Bruther in 2007 in Paris. Bruther is the a contraction of the names of its founder. Today, the office is based in Paris and Zurich and works in architecture, research, education, urban planning and landscape. Bruther is known for its public projects throughout France and Europe and for its commitment to socially engaged and responsible architecture. The adaptability and scalability of the buildings are the primary considerations of the firm, which uses mainly industrial raw materials. An architecture project is not so different from a bookshelf. Before it is erected, a building is a sum of drawings, plans and written documents. Its matter is printed on paper, archived in files or shelves. Before it finds its definitive form, the project takes from the book as much as from the palimpsest. Any project-eventually built or not-sediments its strength and relevance by an accumulation of drawings and representations at different scales. The sketch and the final building express the same thing, but they say it better and better, through the different phases of the project

Founded in 2007 by Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot, Bruther works in the fields of architecture, research, education, urbanism, and landscape. Its projects suggest a delicate balance between strategy and form, rigour and freedom, specific and generic, immediacy and evolutivity. The office is known for designs that represent open infrastructures matching an abundance of contextual possibilities and with a wide malleability of uses. This monographic instalment presents a selection of Bruther’s work from 2012 to the present, featuring no less than 20 projects across a range of typologies, from the Helsinki Central Library to sports centres, residential solutions, and more.

a+u’s April issue features Bruther, a Paris-based architectural studio established by Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot in 2007. Describing architecture as a “combat sport,” the duo rose to international prominence with the completion in 2014 of Cultural and Sports Center in the Saint Blaise neighborhood of Paris. Rooted in the cultural geography of France, the project displays a nuanced mediation of urbanity, structure, and program that is informed by cosmopolitan currents and the architects’ belief in the malleability of buildings. Competitions, investigations, and experiments are all part of a work process they see as “a game of strategy and a balancing act” – balancing abstraction with function, diversity with uniformity, opacity with transparency. Twenty-nine projects, ranging from collective housing and cultural and educational institutions to pavilions and exhibitions, are presented here to convey the full extent of Bruther’s work. While many of the projects are unbuilt or small-scale, temporary studies or installations, Bruther’s use of highly realistic and detailed visualizations and models in their design process have ironically allowed for an intense scrutiny of equipment and skin, as they “turn the hidden into a compositional element” in the ever-shifting pursuit of human comfort.

Au-delà des nombreux éléments qui donnent au bâtiment son apparence, l'élément qui reste le plus important est celui qui lui permet de tenir. Comme les animaux ont des os, chaque bâtiment a une structure. Dans cet ouvrage, sept architectes et ingénieurs européens présentent leur travail, leurs approches, stratégies et méthodes de conception structurelle. Trois projets ont été choisis par chacun d'entre eux afin d'illustrer le propos. Ce tour d'horizon est complété par des entretiens avec Rui Furtado (Porto), Bruther (Paris) et Brandlhuber+ (Berlin) et des essais de Ákos Moravánszky et Mario Rinke.
