Abstract

"Cecily Brown creates lush, visceral canvases based on a combination of figuration and abstraction. Her technical proficiency has earned her comparisons to Lucian Freud, Willem de Kooning, and Francis Bacon, yet it is her unique ability to convey the pleasurable and fleeting aspects of sensation that drive her work." "Cecily Brown rapidly rose to success in the late 1990's, and was credited with having contributed to the resurgence of painting at the turn of the millennium. With a visual repertoire indebted as much to the classical themes of the old masters as to porn magazines and Hollywood films, Brown's paintings challenge traditional interpretations and compel us to reconsider the act of painting from a decidedly feminine viewpoint."--Jacket.

Abstract

Cecily Brown is a British-born, New York-based artist who rose to prominence in the late 1990s. Originally influenced by Cubism and Abstract Expressionism, Brown has over the years developed her unique voice, which investigates the sensual qualities of oil paint and portraiture through a satirizing and celebratory process inspired both by abstraction and realism. Gentle and yet forceful, Brown's exuberant brushwork, rich palette, intense energy, and black humor have redefined some of painting's historical canons.

Abstract

The authors of After the Revolution return with an incisive study of the work of contemporary women artists. In After the Revolution, the authors concluded that "The battles may not all have been won . . . but barricades are gradually coming down, and work proceeds on all fronts in glorious profusion." Now, with The Reckoning, authors Heartney, Posner, Princenthal, and Scott bring into focus the accomplishments of 24 acclaimed international women artists born since 1960 who have benefited from the groundbreaking efforts of their predecessors. The book is organized in four thematic sections: "Bad Girls" profiles artists whose work represents an assault on conventional notions of gender and racial difference. "History Lessons" offers reflections on the self in the context of history and globalization. "Spellbound" focuses on womens embrace of the irrational, subjective, and surreal, while "Domestic Disturbances" takes on women's conflicted relationship to home, family, and security. Written in lively prose and fully illustrated throughout, this book gives an informed account of the wonderful diversity of recent contemporary art by women.

Abstract

Spanning a century, this beautifully illustrated history encompasses a diverse but related group of painters, mostly based in London, who focused on the depiction of the human figure and the everyday landscape they inhabited. Despite their great differences, these artists all shared a similarly intense and scrutinizing gaze, and remained loyal to their pursuit of using paint to capture intimate and powerful representations of reality.Focusing on painters active in the second half of the twentieth century (including Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, R.B. Kitaj, Leon Kossoff, Paula Rego, F.N. Souza and Euan Uglow) the book begins by looking at their predecessors, who set a new path for portraying an intimate, subjective and tangible reality artists such as Walter Richard Sickert, David Bomberg, Alberto Giacometti, Chaïm Soutine, Stanley Spencer and William Coldstream. It addresses the relationship between image-making, painting and photography, and also features works by contemporary artists such as Jenny Saville, Cecily Brown and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, artists who paint figures in a manner that feels true to their personal experience of life.

Thirty Years After." Also included are entries focusing on a selection of major women artists, such as Mary Cassatt, Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Kiki Smith, Miwa Yanagi, and Sophie Calle, as well as concise biographies of all the artists discussed in the book and a complete bibliography of Nochlin's publications."--Rabat de la jaquette.
