Cerné de toute part, le livre est sommé de rentrer dans l'ordre numérique. Laboratoires du futur plus innovants que jamais, multinationales du Web, géants de l'électronique, pouvoirs publics et techno-enthousiastes œuvrent de concert pour faire disparaître ce petit 'cube de papier' qui fait figure de fossile à l'heure où la culture numérique s'impose partout. Bien que sa liquidation ne se fasse pas aussi vite que prévu - le marché de l'e-book peinant à s'imposer en France -, les acteurs de la chaîne du livre sont de plus en plus fragilisés, même si certains croient pouvoir transférer leur métier dans un monde qui n'a pourtant pas besoin d'eux. Et ce, alors que les modes de lecture induits par le livre, au fondement de nos façons de penser et de nos manières d'être au monde, sont aujourd'hui en crise. Le livre, dans sa linéarité et sa finitude, dans sa matérialité et sa présence, constitue un espace silencieux qui met en échec le culte de la vitesse, permet de maintenir une cohérence au milieu du chaos. Point d'ancrage, objet d'inscription pour une pensée critique et articulée, hors des réseaux et des flux incessants d'informations et de sollicitations, il est peut-être l'un des derniers lieux de résistance. Au XXe siècle, la nouvelle matérialité numérique de l'écrit fonde l’écran, au singulier, comme une véritable forme culturelle infléchissant les repères de la culture écrite imprimée. Les peintres et les photographes avaient nourri les imaginaires de la culture écrite par les scènes de genre que sont les « scènes de lecture ». Aujourd’hui, que sont nos « scènes de lecture » ? Since the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century, books and print culture have been central to the shaping of culture and society. The director of the famed Bodleian Libraries at Oxford narrates the global history of the willful destruction--and surprising survival--of recorded knowledge over the past three millennia. Libraries and archives have been attacked since ancient times but have been especially threatened in the modern era. Today the knowledge they safeguard faces purposeful destruction and willful neglect; deprived of funding, libraries are fighting for their very existence. Burning the Books recounts the history that brought us to this point. Richard Ovenden describes the deliberate destruction of knowledge held in libraries and archives from ancient Alexandria to contemporary Sarajevo, from smashed Assyrian tablets in Iraq to the destroyed immigration documents of the United Kingdom's Windrush generation. He examines both the motivations for these acts -- political, religious, and cultural -- and the broader themes that shape this history. He also looks at attempts to prevent and mitigate attacks on knowledge, exploring the efforts of librarians and archivists to preserve information, often risking their own lives in the process. More than simply repositories for knowledge, libraries and archives inspire and inform citizens. In preserving notions of statehood recorded in such historical documents as the Declaration of Independence, libraries support the state itself. By preserving records of citizenship and records of the rights of citizens as enshrined in legal documents such as the Magna Carta and the decisions of the United States Supreme Court, they support the rule of law.
