Abstract

During the year 2006 sheep and cattle livestock were severely affected by a tropical disease called bluetongue. This was transmitted by biting midges from the gender culicoide. Until now only tropical areas were in contact with the disease and this since a century. Twenty-four different strains exist but only the 8th affected our country still today. During the epidemic there were no effective vaccines available against this train and this forced veterinaries to focus on a symptomatic treatment based on anti-inflammatory and antibiotic agents. Several insecticides agents were also used to lower the transmission of the bluetongue virus. In the past live attenuated vaccines were used but they produced lots of adverse effects. Indeed they are suspected to have created new BTV strains and to have infected midges. Because of the need to find an effective vaccine many received a temporary authorization of utilization. The vaccines that are used now are inactivated ones and thus are safer than the live attenuated ones but they don’t protect against all strains. Recent researchers are based on recombinant vaccines that would be effective against all strains.

Abstract

The blue tongue is an infectious but not contagious disease that we find today in our Belgian and European farms and affecting cattle and small ruminants (sheep, goats, by example). The statement of the FCO is compulsory in Belgium and at the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) due to the fact that it leads to heavy economic losses and significantly disrupt the international trade of animals and products of animal origin.
Caused by a virus transmitted by a “mosquito” of African origin (Culicoides), it was initially considered as an exotic disease but since its “astonishing” appearance in northern Europe in 2006, she became an epizootic disease in our regions.
Initially affecting mainly sheep, with severe clinical signs, it then spread to cattle which clinical signs were less important.
Finally, to irradiate this disease, measured, including vaccination, have been implemented. It remains now to access the cost-benefits of this vaccine and its effectiveness.

Abstract

The third volume in the Institute of Animal Health (IAH) Biology of Animal Infections Series, Bluetongue discusses one of the most economically important diseases of domesticated livestock. Affecting primarily sheep particularly the improved mutton and wool breeds, it is now endemic in Africa, India, the Middle and Far East, Australia and the Americas, and over the last six years has caused a series of outbreaks throughout the Mediterranean region and central Europe. Bluetongue represent a paradigm not only for the other orbiviruses (such as African horse sickness virus, which shares the same vector species) but also for other insect transmitted diseases, including those of humans. * The only single definitive work that provides both historical and up to date data on the disease * Describes the latest developments in epidemiological modelling, molecular epidemiology and vaccine development, as well as explaining the current global epidemiology of the disease * Outlines the importance and possible mechanisms of overwintering, and the impact of global warming on the vectors and virus distribution.
