The Golden Age raconte l'histoire de quelques 40 peintres et sculpteurs, parmi lesquels quelques femmes vivant dans le Grand Duché de Finlande et recherchant une identité nationale en même temps que l'indépendance. A l'époque, la Finlande était peut-être mieux connue qu'aujourd'hui du reste de l'Europe. L'auteur s'intéresse aux différentes influences que subirent les artistes depuis le milieu du XIXème siècle. Par leurs voyages à travers l'Europe, ils apportèrent de nouvelles idées dans le domaine de l'art, pas toujours acceptées par leurs compatriotes, et les adaptèrent à leur contrées, créant ainsi un art nordique particulièrement reconnaissable.
