This is the first major monographic publication dedicated to the work of German painter, Irma Blank (b. 1934) gathering a large selection of works from all her series, from the 1960s to the most recent ones initiated in 2017. It also includes work from her well-known Radical Writings series. Blank reflects the artist’s dedication to a minimal process of writing without words that questions the boundaries of communication and expression. She found out that ‘there is no such thing as the right word’ and started off working on her first abstract series at the end of the 1960s. The book is a chronological journey through her cyclical work, in which each series is an almost ascetic dedication to an emptied form of calligraphy. Some of the works are reproduced on a 1:1 scale allowing the reader a more intimate contact with the work. Features a recent conversation between Irma Blank and Hans-Ulrich Obrist.Published on occasion of the 2019-2021 touring exhibition, Irma Blank: Blank at Culturgest (Lisbon), MAMCO (Geneva), CAPC (Bordeaux), CCA (Tel Aviv), ICA (Milan), Museo Villa Dei Cedri (Bellinzona), and Bombas Gens Centre d’Art (Valencia).

Splendid Isolation is a group exhibition that seeks to explore the particular conditions of life in solitude, and more precisely the creative impulses it can nourish. Bringing together an intergenerational and international group of artists, it centres on the artistic output that is induced by life under self-imposed or forced restrictions and foregrounds herein a number of positions. They include working conditions in which artists have been brutally cut off from their environment, have opted for a voluntary withdrawal or are bound to live in socially restricted conditions within their own community. Solitude can be either welcomed or dreaded as uninvited loneliness. The introspection and concentration associated with a creative practice has occasionally motivated artists to withdraw from society. Living in silence can be experienced as an advantage or even as a necessary requirement to create. Today, any form of absolute isolation has become hard to imagine. In a globalised world with its deeply networked structures, life is imbued with interaction, visibility and connectedness. Under these circumstances, personal withdrawal and escapist desires often align with the choice for a more sustainable or even autarkic life or are inspired by a fundamental dissatisfaction with an unjust political system.

The catalogue book "Blank. Raw. Illegible... Artists' Books as Statements (1960-2022)" is published on the occasion of the likewise titled exhibition at the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren. It is dedicated to the artistic phenomenon of blank books in an international context since 1960. The concept of making the empty, the illegible, and the non-imageable the content of books, which runs counter to the conventional understanding of the function and content of a book, has developed a rich artistic practice with diverse aspects. It reveals that communication and language consist of negotiation, agreement, refusal, and difference, work with humor, irony, and also speechlessness, and deal with beginnings and endings, imagination and reference, freedom of expression and censorship.
