Abstract

"More than 50 years have passed since Professor Larry L. Hench discovered Bioglass. However bioactive glasses still awake the fascination of scientists, lecturers, students, dentists, orthopedic surgeons, etc. all over the world. The research developed during the subsequent decades has resulted in new materials that significantly differ from the original melt-derived Bioglass. The use of the sol-gel process in the 1990's and the discovery of mesoporous bioactive glasses in the 2000's revealed new potential applications in the field of bone regeneration and drug delivery platforms. Besides, the development of rapid prototyping techniques has allowed manufacturing bioglass-based 3D scaffolds in combination with polymers, which boosts the long-standing expectative of using bioactive glasses for the treatment of critical bone defects. Finally, the advances in nanomedicine have opened new research lines involving the synthesis and development of bioactive glass nanoparticles. "Bioactive Glasses: Properties, Composition and Recent Applications" consists of ten chapters written by worldwide recognized experts in this field. The book covers the most important topics in the field of bioactive glasses, from its discovering to the most recent advances in preparation methods and applications. This book is addressed to researchers involved in the field of bioceramics, but it also an excellent tool for undergraduate and PhD students, given that nowadays Biomaterials Science is a subject included in the program of many universities. Only knowing the discoveries that fifty years ago fascinated us, our students will understand the current efforts to expand the applications of bioactive glasses"--

Abstract

"[Archipelagos: Types, Characteristics and Conservation] begins by examining the Canary Islands and their characteristic orography and regime of winds that affect this archipelago. Investigations were carried out by the authors which allowed for the characterization of the atmospheric corrosion for metals of wide industrial use. Due too its geographical location, the Azores archipelago is one of the perfect places to observe and study the characteristics of atmospheric processes. The remote conditions of the islands allow for the monitoring of greenhouse gases without the influence of local sources of pollution. Consequences of climate change are also discussed. The closing chapter discusses a new paradigm in the sol-gel synthesis, particularly in the synthesis of bioactive glass. In this new approach, the deionized water is replaced by highly ionized and naturally acidified thermal water collected from springs located in Furnas Volcano. Given the potential impact of these waters on the structure and bioactivity of sol-gel bioactive glass, special emphasis is given to their genesis, physicochemical properties and ionic diversity"--

Abstract

Mesoporous materials are capturing great interest thanks to their exceptional surface area, uniform and tunable pore size, ease surface functionalization, thus enabling broad series of intervention in the field of nanomedicine. Since many years, these aspects foster a deep investigation on mesoporous nanoparticles, to design and fabricate biocompatible, smart and stimuli-responsive nanotools for controlled drug- or gene-delivery, theranostics applications, in particular for cancer therapy, and tissue engineering. This Book is thus dedicated to the most recent advances in the field, collecting research papers and reviews. It spans from the synthesis and characterization of the mesoporous material, especially those made of silica, silicon and bioactive glasses, to their functionalization with smart gate-keepers, reporter molecules or targeting ligands, up to their in-vitro applications in the nanomedicine field.
