Il y a bien longtemps que l'on ne croit plus que la Bible ait pu "tomber du ciel". Toutefois, le caractère sacré que lui confèrent des millions de croyants fait que beaucoup hésitent encore à admettre qu'elle puisse faire l'objet d'études critiques. Cependant, entre la sacralisation inconditionnelle et le rejet méprisant, il existe une troisième voie, celle d'une lecture "profane" permettant non pas de conduire les lecteurs au coeur de la Bible, mais de leur en faire connaître les contours et l'histoire.
