Das Buch untersucht Gregor von Nyssas Traktat «In inscriptiones Psalmorum». Dieser legt den Psalter als einen Meditationstext aus, der Gott suchende Menschen begleiten und über einen stufenweisen Aufstieg bis zur vollendeten Seligkeit führen will. Die Reihenfolge der Psalmen und ihre Gruppierung in fünf Bücher spiegeln einzelne Schritte und Etappen dieses Weges. Der Autor analysiert Gregors exegetische Arbeitsweise und legt eine Übersetzung des Traktats ins Deutsche vor. Eine hermeneutische Bilanz deutet den Kappadokier als einen Denker, der den christlichen Glauben im Kontext seiner Zeit in einer der philosophischen Vernunft gemäßen Weise erschließt.

The purpose of the volume is to explore how specific historical and socio-cultura conditions of late antiquity shaped the development of Christian thought. The authors of the volume analyse various aspects of these conditions, particularly those of a textual and institutional nature, as they are reflected in the hermeneutic and philosophical principles of Christian discourse. This focus sheds new light on unexplored features of Christian literature, such as the influence of manuscript culture, early church institutions and practices, exegetical techniques, and philosophical curricula.
