Abstract

2 Thessalonians is one of the most enigmatic letters in the New Testament, primarily because of its repeated insistence on its authorship by Paul, coupled with its warnings against forgery of Pauline letters. Modern scholarship has made a number of advances in the study of this letter, but the question of the authorship and purpose remain quite open. Hughes gives a detailed investigation of Graeco-Roman rhetorical traditions and their relationship to letters, and develops a consensus model for the identification of the various conventional parts of rhetorical discourses. He then offers an inte

Abstract

This bibliography lists some 1300 works germane for the interpretation of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. It includes all relevant works written in the 20th century as well as a sizeable number of important sources from the 19th century. Virtually all the works listed are annotated, except for commentaries and dictionary articles. These annotations do not merely describe the content of each source but attempt to summarize its central thesis or argument. The works listed are classified and cross-indexed in such a way that the user is able to track down easily the relevant sources on any given topic or passage in the Thessalonian letters.

Abstract

This study contributes to debate about the portraits of Paul in Acts and his epistles by considering Paul's Miletus speech (Acts 20.18b-35) and identifies and compares major themes in Luke and Paul's views of Christian leadership. Comparisons with Jesus' speeches in Luke show how Lukan the speech is and, with 1 Thessalonians, how Pauline it is. The speech calls the Ephesian elders to service after Paul's departure to Jerusalem, focusing on: faithful fulfilment of leadership responsibility; suffering; attitudes to wealth and work; and the death of Jesus. Paul models Christian leadership for the elders. Parallels in Luke highlight his view of Christian leadership - modelled by Jesus and taught to his disciples, and modelled by Paul and taught to the elders. Study of 1 Thessalonians identifies a remarkably similar portrait of Christian leadership. The Miletus speech is close in thought, presentation and vocabulary to an early, indubitably Pauline letter.

Abstract

Isaiah 59 portrays a deity in armour warring against rebellious human foes. In this historical investigation, Yoder Neufeld maps the transformation of an ancient tradition into a creative new reading in which God's people put on God's armour and go to battle against God's heavenly foes, as in Ephesians 6. The Pauline recasting of the Isaianic motif, argues the author, is a bracing one.
