Doelstelling: The goal of this dissertation is to investigate whether times of crisis have an impact on the use of metaphors in banks' annual reports in both English and Dutch. Middelen of methode: This dissertation has taken both a quantitative and a qualitative approach. Firstly, the dissertation has determined whether there are topic and ground differences between the English and Dutch metaphors in 2007 and 2008. Secondly, the dissertation has compared the semantic fields to which the corpus metaphors belong. Thirdly, this dissertation has determined whether the corpus metaphors have a positive or a negative meaning. Resultaten: First, the topic of both the English and Dutch metaphors is implicit in most cases and the grounds are always implicit.Secondly, while all English and Dutch metaphors belong to many different semantic fields, the Dutch reports even reveal a larger number of semantic fields that frequently occur than the English ones.The third result is the large majority of both English and Dutch metaphors having a positive meaning in 2007 while in 2008, there are about as many metaphors with a positive meaning as with a negative meaning.Finally, the impact of the crisis is that in 2008, more metaphors with a negative meaning occur than in 2007, both in English and in Dutch. The crisis did not have an effect on the topic and grounds, nor on the semantic fields.
