Abstract

Bernard Tschumi is a border crosser in the field of contemporary architecture. Equally present in Europe and the United States, he laid the cornerstone for his influential body of work two decades ago with a project that combines architecture and landscape architecture, theory and practice: the Parc de la Villette in Paris. Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture in New York for many years and the author of numerous books on architectural theory, Tschumi possesses a body of work that is presented here in overview for the first time. His current projects include a high-rise apartment building in New York, the Zénith Concert Hall in Limoges, and the new Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Abstract

Architect Bernard Tschumi is internationally regarded as one of the boldest thinkers in contemporary architecture as well as one of its most inventive formgivers. Translating his bold visions into built structure has always been challenging and nowhere is this more evident than in the Zénith de Rouen, his recently completed concert hall and exhibition complex in Rouen, France. As one of the most accomplished and seductive of Tschumi's built projects, the Zénith de Rouen stands as a tour-de-force of design, technique and construction. Including and exhaustive presentation of sketches, models, computer renderings, working drawings and photographs of the construction process and the finished work, this book documents the project at a level of detail that allows complete and careful study from its conception to its completion. This in-depth graphic presentation is accompanied by commentaries from the architect (and others) that further explore both the cultural and technical significance of the important building.
