No other artist of Classical Modernism has achieved a similar mythical status to that of Paula Modersohn-Becker. At the same time, the view of her work is often distorted by clichés. This comprehensive publication pays particular attention to the progressive nature of Modersohn?s works, in which this early representative of the avant-garde defied all social and artistic conventions.00How and why did Paula Modersohn-Becker succeed in creating iconic pictures which continue to move and fascinate viewers today? The remarkable radicalism of her attitude and her works, her stylistic modernity and almost photographic lingering on details can be seen in succinct series and pictorial subjects showing her individual treatment of colour and form and her style. The breadth of her opulently presented oeuvre, created within a period of not quite a single decade, extends from self-portraits, early nudes, portraits, pictures of children and representations of mother and child and peasants to still lifes and landscapes which impress through their timeless directness.

Considered one of the most important of the early German modernists, painter Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) was the first woman artist to challenge centuries of traditional representations of the female body in art. She was the first to paint herself nude, as well as mothers and children nude. She also creted self-portraits while she was pregnant. Modersohn-Becker painted the life she was living as a woman and artist at the threshold of modernism, and paved the way for generations of women artists.

Exhibition: Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, The Netherlands (08.04. - 12.08.2018) / Von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal, Germany (09.09.2018 - 06.01.2019).

"Paula Modersohn-Becker, Käthe Kollwitz, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin are among the exceptional artists associated with the emergence of Expressionism in Germany in the early decades of the twentieth century. Each challenged prevailing ideals of feminine identity at a time of great societal change. As women, they were expected to marry and raise a family; some chose to, some did not. As ambitious artists, all wanted to work, and as they rose to these challenges, their art further undermined conventions. Their depictions of children symbolise joy, hope and innocence but also melancholy, tension, curiosity, the passing of time and unfulfilled desire. Their radical depictions of the nude wrest the female body away from the male gaze towards a newfound role, expressive of powerful maternity and female subjectivity. These dramatic modernist compositions, with their fluid brushwork and bright hues, push at the boundaries of form, colour and spiritual meaning"--
