Jakob Balde (1604-1668) ist der bedeutendste neulateinische Dichter Deutschlands. Europäischen Ruhm erlangte er mit den Lyrica sowie vor allem mit den Sylvae (poetische "Wälder"), weltlichen und geistlichen Gedichtzyklen mit biographischen und politischen Bezügen unter dem Eindruck des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs. Viele Gedichte erscheinen hier zum ersten Mal in Übersetzung und eingehender Interpretation.

Aus Anlass des 400. Geburtstags des bedeutenden neulateinischen Barockdichters Jakob Balde, der aus dem Elsass stammt, untersuchen französische und deutsche Forscher eine bisher wenig beachtete, gleichwohl eindrucksvolle Seite seines Werks: die bis ans Artistische grenzende satirische Gestaltungskunst. Es geht in diesem Band nicht nur um das Genus der Satire, sondern auch um die satirischen Züge in den anderen Werken. Die Theorie der Baldeschen Satire - auch im Kontext der Zeit - wird behandelt. Es zeigt sich, dass Balde bewusst in der Tradition der römischen Satiriker steht, aber in glücklicher Erfindung neue Wege beschreitet.
