Abstract

Microbial utilization of the inexhuaustible lignocellulosic biomass for the production of industrial chemicals, liquid fuels, protein-rich feed and food, and preparation of cellulose polymers, is an attractive approach to help meet energy and food demands. Whilst biomass has served as substrate in microbial processes for the production of alchololic beverages for a long time, it is only recently that broader applications of this material have been envisaged. Hemicellulose-derived sugars have many potential uses in the production of industrial chemicals and solvents. Considerable developments h

Abstract

Recent determination of genome sequences for a wide range of bacteria has made in-depth knowledge of prokaryotic metabolic function essential in order to give biochemical, physiological, and ecological meaning to the genomic information. Clearly describing the important metabolic processes that occur in prokaryotes under different conditions and in different environments, this advanced text provides an overview of the key cellular processes that determine bacterial roles in the environment, biotechnology, and human health. Prokaryotic structure is described as well as the means by which nutrients are transported into cells across membranes. Glucose metabolism through glycolysis and the TCA cycle are discussed, as well as other trophic variations found in prokaryotes, including the use of organic compounds, anaerobic fermentation, anaerobic respiratory processes, and photosynthesis. The regulation of metabolism through control of gene expression and control of the activity of enzymes is also covered, as well as survival mechanisms used under starvation conditions.

Abstract

This important new textbook is the culmination of 25 years of teaching microbial physiology and metabolism to undergraduate and graduate students. A theme that guided the writing of this textbook is that students must not simply memorize material such as metabolic pathways and bioenergetic models, but they should understand the underlying principles. To that end, similarities and contrasts between metabolic pathways and other physiological activities are pointed out through the textbook, and separate sections are devoted to describing the chemistry and physics for key reactions. In addition to describing physiological and metabolic features common to most microorganisms, the textbook also offers a modern perspective on metabolic diversity. Topics included in this text are: cell structure, growth, bioenergetics, electron transport, photosynthesis, metabolic regulation, intermediary metabolism, cell wall biosynthesis, fermentations, C1 metabolism, inorganic metabolism, solute transport, protein secretion, homeostasis, and two-component as well as other signaling systems. Each chapter concludes with a summary emphasizing the major points covered, and a set of study questions to test the students' mastery of the material.
