Abstract

In the years following the success of his 1897 novel Dracula, Bram Stoker took on an even more ambitious creative feat: combining mystery, romance, adventure, Gothic atmosphere, and supernatural elements in one gripping tale. The end result of this process of experimentation was The Mystery of the Sea. If you're a fan of Stoker's fiction or a sucker for classic action-adventure, add this to your must-read list.

Abstract

The foundling Tom Jones is found on the property of a benevolent, wealthy landowner. Tom grows up to be a vigorous, kind-hearted young man, whose love of his neighbor's well-born daughter brings class friction to the fore. The presence of prostitution and promiscuity in Tom Jones caused a sensation at the time it was published, as such themes were uncommon. It is divided into 18 shorter books, and is considered one of the first English-language novels.

Abstract

`But it's bad - it's bad,' Mr Tulliver added - `a woman's no business wi' being so clever; it'll turn to trouble, I doubt.'Rebellious and affectionate, Maggie Tulliver is always in trouble. Recalling her own experiences as a girl, George Eliot describes Maggie's turbulent childhood with a sympathetic engagement that makes the early chapters of The Mill on the Floss among the most immediately attractive she ever wrote. As Maggie Tulliver approaches adulthood, her spirited temperament brings her into conflict with her family, her community, and her much-loved brother Tom. Still more painfully, she finds her own nature divided between the claims of moral responsibility and her passionate hunger for self-fulfilment.George Eliot's searching exploration of Maggie's complex dilemma has made this one of the most enduringly popular of her works. This edition offers the definitive Clarendon text with a new introduction that gives an account of the book's place in Eliot's life and the intellectual context of the time, as well as providing close textual analysis.

Abstract

North and South draws on Gaskell's own experiences of the poverty and hardship of life in the industrial north of England. Her heroine, Margaret Hale, is taken from the wealthy south by her nonconformist minister father, to live in a fictional northern town. The stark differences are explored through Margaret's abrupt change in circumstance, and her sympathetic reaction to the plight of the northerners. She comes into conflict with a local mill owner who proposes marriage to her. The two undergo a series of misunderstandings and changes of heart before they are reunited.

Abstract

"Of all Jane Austen's books, Pride and Prejudice has earned a special place in the hearts of the reading public as her best-loved and most intimately known novel. From its famous opening sentence the story of the Bennet family and of the novel's two protagonists, Elizabeth and Darcy, told with a wit that its author feared might prove 'rather too light and bright, and sparkling', delights its most familiar readers as thoroughly as it does those who encounter it for the first time. Jane Austen's artistry is apparent, too, in the delineation of the minor characters: the ill-matched Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, Charles Bingley and his sisters, and above all the fatuous Mr. Collins, whose proposal to Elizabeth Bennet is one of the finest comic passages in English literature. And while she entertains us, Jane Austen teaches us the wisdom of balance, the folly of 'pride' and 'prejudice'."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Among the crew, however, is the treacherous Long John Silver who is determined to keep the treasure for himself.
