Comment se fait-il qu’un jeune écrivain lancé avec conviction par Raymond Queneau, et soutenu par l’Oulipo, dont il fut l’un des membres fondateurs en 1960, n’ait pas atteint la postérité littéraire ? Dans cette correspondance croisée, Jacques Bens se révèle un formidable épistolier aux émotions contradictoires, à la fois abrupt et dolent, mais toujours animé par la rigueur intellectuelle, l’humour et l’humanité. Convaincu de la valeur de son écriture, et cependant ployant sous le joug des travaux alimentaires, cet amoureux des textes bien faits, en butte à l’insuccès, s’autoproclame « prolétaire des lettres » – se portraiturant parfois comme un « vieux crocodile ». Parallèlement, son exil de la capitale lui permet de conserver en son for intérieur une conception « puriste », de l’Oulipo, telle qu’elle fut vécue par ses membres fondateurs de la première décennie du groupe.

Many people assume that what morally justifies private ownership of property is either individual freedom or social welfare, defined in terms of maximizing personal preference-satisfaction. This text offers an alternative way of understanding the moral underpinning of private ownership of property. Rather than identifying any single moral value, this work argues that human flourishing is property's moral foundation. It develops a theory that connects ownership and human flourishing with obligations.

Property enhances autonomy for most people, but not for all. Because it both empowers and disables, property requires constant vigilance. A Liberal Theory of Property addresses key questions: how can property be justified? What core values should property law advance, and how do those values interrelate? How is a liberal state obligated to act when shaping property law? In a liberal polity, the primary commitment to individual autonomy dominates the justification of property, founding it on three pillars: carefully delineated private authority, structural (but not value) pluralism, and relational justice. A genuinely liberal property law meets the legitimacy challenge confronting property by expanding people's opportunities for individual and collective self-determination while carefully restricting their options of interpersonal domination. The book shows how the three pillars of liberal property account for core features of existing property systems, provide a normative vocabulary for evaluating central doctrines, and offer directions for urgent reforms.
