Since the discovery of free radicals in biological systems researchers have been highly interested in their interaction with biological molecules. Denoted in 1980, and due to fruitful results and ideas, oxidative stress is now appreciated by both basic and applied scientists as an enhanced steady state level of reactive oxygen species with wide range of biological effects. This book covers a wide range of aspects and issues related to the field of oxidative stress. The association between generation and elimination of reactive species and effects of oxidative stress are also addressed, as well as summaries of recent works on the signaling role of reactive species in eukaryotic organisms. The readers will gain an overview of our current understanding of homeostasis of reactive species and cellular processes they are involved in, as well as useful resources for further reading.

This book consists of lectures presented by international authorities in the field, at a course on Oxidation Catalysis organized by the Dutch Research School in Catalysis at Rolduc in June 1994. The material covered spans the whole range of the subject from the fundamental principles of gas and liquid phase oxidations to reactor engineering for industrial processing. The use of catalytic oxidation in both bulk and fine chemicals manufacture and the different types of catalysis - heterogeneous-gas phase, homogeneous-liquid phase and heterogeneous-liquid phase - are discussed. In addition, a few

Metallic Glasses and Their Oxidation provides a comprehensive review of the structures, properties, preparations, processing and applications of metallic glasses. Special attention is paid to the oxidation behaviors and related mechanisms of metallic glasses that occur during their preparation, processing and application. The book's authors introduce basic knowledge of metallic glasses, including their structures, properties, processing techniques and applications. Then, the theories and techniques commonly used in oxidation investigation are highlighted, including thermal oxidation, native oxidation, stressed oxidation, powder oxidation and oxidation simulation. The book closes with the influence of oxidation on the structures and performances of metallic glasses, proposes measures to control oxidation, and discusses how to take advantage of oxidation to reinforce materials or create new materials.

The thermal cyclic oxidation test has become one of the most widely accepted ways of measuring high temperature corrosion. There has long been a need for an agreed code of practice with standardised methods and procedures to ensure both the comparability and reliability of the results obtained. Based on an EU project, 'Cyclic oxidation testing - development of a code of practice for the characterisation of high temperature materials performance' (COTEST), this volume provides the essential background to an appropriate code of practice. The first part of the book reviews the range of exi

Since the classic work Metal-Catalyzed Oxidations of Organic Compounds (edited by R A Sheldon and J K Kochi, 1991), no book has been devoted to advances in the field of biomimetic oxidations, which was created nearly 18 years ago. This expanding research field is covered in this volume. All the different aspects of the modeling of oxidations catalyzed by metalloenzymes are dealt with. This invaluable book will be useful to postgraduates as well as researchers in academia and industry, and will also benefit second year university students.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in both total oxidation and combustion and also in selective oxidation. For each topic, fundamental aspects are paralleled with industrial applications. The book covers oxidation catalysis, one of the major areas of industrial chemistry, outlining recent achievements, current challenges and future opportunities. One distinguishing feature of the book is the selection of arguments which are emblematic of current trends in the chemical industry, such as miniaturization, use of alternative, greener oxidants, and innovative systems for pollutant abatement. Topics outlined are described in terms of both catalyst and reaction chemistry, and also reactor and process technology.
