Abstract

"This book examines the key dimensions of 21st century war, and shows that orthodox thinking about war, particularly what it is and how it is fought, needs to be updated.Accelerating societal, economic, political and technological change affects how we prepare, equip and organise for war, as well as how we conduct war – both in its low-tech and high-tech forms, and whether it is with high intensity or low intensity. The volume examines changes in warfare by investigating the key features of the conduct of war during the first decades of the 21st century. Conceptually centred around the terms ‘kinetic’, ‘connected’ and ‘synthetic’, the analysis delves into a wide range of topics. The contributions discuss hybrid warfare, cyber and influence activities, machine learning and artificial intelligence, the use of armed drones and air power, the implications of the counterinsurgency experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, as well as the consequences for law(fare) and decision making. This work will be of much interest to students of military and strategic studies, security studies and International Relations."

Abstract

Equipping robots with complex capabilities still requires a great amount of effort. In this work, a novel approach is proposed to understand, to represent and to execute object manipulation tasks learned from observation by combining methods of data analysis, graphical modeling and artificial intelligence. Employing this approach enables robots to reason about how to solve tasks in dynamic environments and to adapt to unseen situations.

Abstract

This book provides answers on how allies have to prepare for the strategic challenges in the maritime domain of the 21st century. 24 noted international authors, scholars and practitioners alike, refer to areas of operation and relevant trends and developments. They include the strategic consideration of NATO’s “Northern Flank” as well as an outlook on “Naval Warfare 4.0”. The concise chapters are characterized by their scientific fundament, on which basis recommended actions are drawn. With its substantial practical relevance, this volume is of much value for academics and practitioners in the fields of international relations, security policy, and strategic studies in Germany, Europe, and NATO. With contributions by James H. Bergeron, Keith E. Blount, Sebastian Bruns, Jim Fanell, James Goldrick, Niklas Granholm, Tom Guy, Frank Hoffmann, Sidharth Kaushal, Frédéric Lasserre, Kaspar Pajos, Sarandis Papadopoulos, Chris Parry, Julian Pawlak, Johannes Peters, Pauline Pic, Deborah Sanders, John Sherwood, Dirk Siebels, Jeremy Stöhs, Bruce Stubbs, Sarah Tarry and Alix Valenti.

Abstract

This open access book reports on methods and technologies to describe, evaluate and control uncertainty in mechanical engineering applications. It brings together contributions by engineers, mathematicians and legal experts, offering a multidisciplinary perspective on the main issues affecting uncertainty throughout the complete system lifetime, which includes process and product planning, development, production and usage. The book is based on the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Uncertainty in Mechanical Engineering (ICUME 2021), organized by the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 805 of the TU Darmstadt, and held online on June 7–8, 2021. All in all, it offers a timely resource for researchers, graduate students and practitioners in the field of mechanical engineering, production engineering and engineering optimization.

Abstract

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book establishes the foundations needed to realize the ultimate goals for artificial intelligence, such as autonomy and trustworthiness. Aimed at scientists, researchers, technologists, practitioners, and students, it brings together contributions offering the basics, the challenges and the state-of-the-art on trusted autonomous systems in a single volume. The book is structured in three parts, with chapters written by eminent researchers and outstanding practitioners and users in the field. The first part covers foundational artificial intelligence technologies, while the second part covers philosophical, practical and technological perspectives on trust. Lastly, the third part presents advanced topics necessary to create future trusted autonomous systems. The book augments theory with real-world applications including cyber security, defence and space.
