Helper T cells play a critical role in the induction of tissue inflammation in immunity and autoimmunity. Various subsets of T cells such as Th1, Th2, Th9 and Th17 cells have been shown to play a key role in the induction of tissue inflammation in allergic and organ-specific autoimmune inflammation. On the other hand, regulatory cells such as Foxp3+Tregs and Tr1 cells are essential to control functions of effector T cells and maintain tissue homeostasis. Distinct transcriptional and molecular pathways have been identified for the generation of various effector and regulatory T cells. Emerging molecular signatures of these effectors and of regulatory T cells indicate plasticity in their developmental pathways, which is dictated by the tissue microenvironment and by other factors including cytokines and transcription factors.

The Autoimmune Diseases, Sixth Edition, emphasizes the "3 P’s" of 21st Century medicine: precision, prediction and prevention. Topics cover the modern systems approach to biology that involves large amounts of personalized, ongoing physiologic data ("omics") coupled with advanced methods of analysis, new tests of genetic engineering, such as CRISPR, auto inflammatory diseases, autoimmune responses to tumor immunotherapy, and information on normal immune response and disorders. Each of the major autoimmune disorders is discussed by researchers and clinical investigators experienced in dealing with patients. Chapters emphasize the immunologic basis of the disease as well as the use of immunologic diagnostic methods and treatments. The book also covers several cross-cutting issues related to the recognition and treatment of autoimmune diseases, including chapters on the measurement of autoantibodies and T cells, the use of biomarkers as early predictors of disease, and new methods of treatment. -- Publisher

Since publication of the 4th Edition of The Autoimmune Diseases in 2006, the understanding of the immune mechanisms underlying autoimmunity and autoimmune disease has significantly deepened and broadened. This fully revised 5th Edition incorporates new material and combines common themes underlying inductive and effector mechanisms and therapies that relate generally to the autoimmune disorders. It discusses the biological basis of disease at genetic, molecular, cellular, and epidemiologic levels and includes expanded coverage of autoinflammatory disease and aut
