La biographie d'écrivain (sur un écrivain par un écrivain) est un genre qui a de très longues racines historiques, mais qui a connu, au cours des vingt-cinq ou trente dernières années, un développement fulgurant. C'est sans doute la levée - poststructuraliste - de l'interdit concernant la personne de l'auteur qui a permis, tout au moins en France, la résurrection d'une écriture biographique légitimée. On date en général cette renaissance du mitan des années 1980 alors que, coup sur coup, Duras, Robbe-Grillet et Sollers donnaient des textes (auto) biographiques au statut certes problématique mais néanmoins assumé. Savamment entretenu par des incursions dans le romanesque, par des transpositions diverses et par des nostalgies génériques nombreuses, ce flou générique apparaît d'ailleurs comme une caractéristique majeure de la production biographique de l'après-1980 - de ces écritures que nous désignons comme « nouvelles ». Le lecteur trouvera ici des analyses d'une production qui veut bien renouer avec la figure de l'auteur, mais qui n'entend pas être dupe de ses chatoiements. L'« illusion biographique » (Bourdieu) a bel et bien vécu, et de nombreux biographes contemporains savent désormais que la vérité de l'autre ne peut être appréhendée que par le jeu des formes (ou par le jeu avec la mémoire des formes), si ce n'est, pour dire comme Lacan, « dans une ligne de fiction ».

Pour défendre et illustrer un genre souvent hâtivement décrié, l'ouvrage donne à entendre des voix contemporaines, avec des textes inédits de Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt, Camille Laurens, Catherine Cusset, Hubert Lucot, Régine Robin, Jacqueline Rousseau-Dujardin, Chloé Delaume, Philippe Forest, Marie Darrieussecq, Philippe Vilain et Serge Doubrovsky. Suivent des plongées « dans le(s) texte(s) », lectures et analyses des pratiques de l'écriture de soi du Nouveau Roman à l'Oulipo, de Marguerite Duras à Patrick Modiano. Enfin, c'est un diptyque, « de Doubrovsky en particulier » à « l'autofiction en général », qui permet d'embrasser tous les aspects du genre, des méandres de la terminologie jusqu'aux questions juridiques traitées par Emmanuel Pierrat.

Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time. General questions of the literary as, e.g., the relation between literature and reality, truth and fiction, the dependency of author, narrator, and figure, or issues of individual and cultural styles etc., can be studied preeminently in the autobiographical genre. Yet, the tradition of life-writing has, in the course of literary history, developed manifold types and forms. Especially in the globalized age, where the media and other technological / cultural factors contribute to a rapid transformation of lifestyles, autobiographical writing has maintained, even enhanced, its popularity and importance. By conceiving autobiography in a wide sense that includes memoirs, diaries, self-portraits and autofiction as well as media transformations of the genre, this three-volume handbook offers a comprehensive survey of theoretical approaches, systematic aspects, and historical developments in an international and interdisciplinary perspective. While autobiography is usually considered to be a European tradition, special emphasis is placed on the modes of self-representation in non-Western cultures and on inter- and transcultural perspectives of the genre. The individual contributions are closely interconnected by a system of cross-references. The handbook addresses scholars of cultural and literary studies, students as well as non-academic readers.
