Jacobis letzte Jahre in Pempelfort sind geprägt von der gedanklichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Französischen Revolution, aber auch von der erneuerten Verbindung mit Goethe sowie der Überarbeitung der Romane ›Allwill‹ (1792) und ›Woldemar‹ (1794). Einen wichtigen Bestandteil der Korrespondenz bilden die ausführlichen Berichte seines Sohnes Georg Arnold von der Italienreise mit F. L. Graf zu Stolberg. Doch Jacobis eigene Reisepläne werden bereits überschattet vom Krieg mit Frankreich. Über die zunehmende Bedrohung wird Jacobi auch durch zahlreiche Nachrichten seines in Aachen lebenden Sohnes unterrichtet; sie werden ihn veranlassen, beim Vormarsch der Franzosen im September 1794 seinen erst kurz zuvor neu gestalteten Wohnsitz zu verlassen.

The thematic focus of this commentary volume is determined by the letters published in volume I,9: The emphasis is on Jacobis critical analysis of the French Revolution, on the preparation of a new volume of his "Miscellaneous Writings", with the unexpected result of the publication of a new version of his "Allwill", on his work "Letters on Kant's Philosophy", written for Matthias Claudius, and especially on his son's letters from his journey to Italy and Sicily, together with F. L. zu Stolberg. The commentary provides detailed information on the genesis of Jacobi's writings and on his sons's itinerary. The end of September 1794 represents a radical change in Jacobi‹s life: In order to escape from the attacks of the French revolutionary troops, he leaves Düsseldorf-Pempelfort and emigrates to Holstein, at the time part of Denmark. Over the following four years, Jacobi moves from place to place, leading, in his own words, a »Gypsy life«, albeit not an uncomfortable one. It is a life marked by manifold new contacts – not least with prominent French emigrants. Philosophically, this is the period of the work on ›Woldemar‹ (1796) and the critical analysis of Fichte‹s way of thinking. His first letter to Jacobi opens this volume. Der 28. September 1794 bildet einen scharfen Einschnitt im Leben Jacobis: Er flieht vor den französischen Revolutionstruppen aus Pempelfort nach Hamburg und in das damals dänische Holstein. Dort führt er in den folgenden Jahren ein nicht unkomfortables, von vielfältigen neuen Kontakten zu Hamburger und Holsteiner Kreisen wie auch zu prominenten französischen Emigranten geprägtes »Zigeunerleben«, wie Jacobi es nannte. Philosophisch ist diese Zeit durch die Ausarbeitung des ›Woldemar‹ (1796), die Freundschaft mit Reinhold und die Auseinandersetzung mit Fichtes Denken bestimmt, dessen erster Brief an Jacobi den Band eröffnet.
