This book examines the role of the visual and performing arts in higher education and argues for the importance of socially engaged transdisciplinary practices, not just to the college curriculum but also to building an informed and engaged citizenry. The first chapter defines and offers an outline for conducting transdisciplinary research. Chapters two through five present examples of transdisciplinary projects facilitated in Central Florida between 2017 and 2022. Topics and methodological frameworks include ecocriticism and climate change, migration, poverty, and displacement, ageing and disability, and systemic racism and mass incarceration. Each chapter includes descriptions of the projects and outlines how they integrated the essential learning outcomes articulated by the American Association of Colleges and Universities in the Liberal Education and America’s Promise report. A concluding chapter offers reflections on the value of transdisciplinary collaborative work and poses questions for further discussions on the role of the arts in higher education. The book is designed for graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and non-academics interested in engaging in transdisciplinary projects to address complex societal issues. Julia Listengarten, Pegasus Professor of Theatre and Artistic Director of the School of Performing Arts, University of Central Florida, USA Keri Watson, Associate Professor of Art History and Director of the Florida Prison Education Project, University of Central Florida, USA.

"Displacement does not only have an effect on groups' and individuals' ways of relating to their identity and their past but the knowledge and experience of it also has an impact on its representation. Looking at films that represent the experience of displacement in relation to Turkey's minorities, Aesthetics of Displacement argues that there is a particular aesthetic continuity among the otherwise unrelated films. Ozlem Koksal focuses on films that bring taboo issues concerning the repression of minorities into visibility, arguing that the changing political and social conditions determine not only the types of stories told but also the ways in which these stories are told. Focusing on aesthetic and narrative continuities, the films discussed include Ararat, Waiting for the Clouds and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia among others. Each film is examined in light of major historical event(s) and their context (political and social) as well as the impact these events had on the construction of both minority and Turkish identity."--

“This wide-ranging and masterful book…is necessary and urgent reading not only for those people in theatre arts and STEM fields in a liberal arts context, but indeed for everyone with an interest and an investment in the future of STEM, Arts, and Humanities tertiary education worldwide.” —Joshua Abrams, Deputy Director, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Past President, Association for Theatre in Higher Education “Kindelan offers a call to action and practical roadmap for educators interested in forging connections between STEM and theater arts fields. The book’s compelling firsthand narratives are icing on the cake, offering implementation examples and testaments to the many ways that disciplinary boundary crossing inspires and empowers both students and teachers.” —Robert Martello, Professor, Olin College of Engineering, USA “Integrative interdisciplinary learning has been a goal of higher education but is complex to understand and challenging to implement. Kindelan offers a comprehensive and highly readable overview that will guide educators as they reflect on these issues and plan and assess reform efforts taking place on individual campuses.” —Nancy Budwig, Professor, Clark University, USA This book responds to challenging questions about holistic curricular realignment, especially how a more porous approach to higher education reduces the impact of a “siloed” curriculum, lessens the tendency toward the fragmentation of knowledge, allows for the development of cross-disciplinary explorations, and promotes new approaches to knowledge and creativity through interdisciplinary integrative learning. In doing so, Kindelan advances discussions about integrative interdisciplinary education between STEM and the fields of performance and performance technologies that have been either overlooked or underdeveloped. Nancy Kindelan is Professor Emerita of Theatre at Northeastern University, Boston, USA, where she directed plays and taught numerous interdisciplinary courses, honors courses, script analysis and performance classes. She is the founding editor of the Palgrave Macmillan book series The Arts in Higher Education.

This book revisits In-Yer-Face theatre, an explosive, energetic theatrical movement from the 1990s that introduced the world to playwrights Sarah Kane, Martin McDonagh, Mark Ravenhill, Jez Butterworth, and many others. Split into three sections the book re-examines the era, considers the movement’s influence on international theatre, and considers its lasting effects on contemporary British theatre. The first section offers new readings on works from that time period (Antony Neilson and Mark Ravenhill) as well as challenges myths created by the Royal Court Theatre about the its involvement with In-Yer-Face theatre. The second section discusses the influence of In-Yer-Face on Portuguese, Russian and Australian theater, while the final section discusses the legacy of In-Yer-Face writers as well as their influences on more recent playwrights, including chapters on Philip Ridley, Sarah Kane, Joe Penhall, Martin Crimp, Dennis Kelly, and Verbatim Drama.

This book brings together discussions about Australian arts policy and funding, outcomes of arts engagement in terms of social inclusion, well-being and education. It presents exemplars of creative programs or case studies that build capacity and lasting impact for communities in urban and regional Australia. This book describes the impact of the arts using narrative case studies. Through this, it develops conceptual understanding and frameworks that can be used to dynamically assess the value and impact of arts engagement across the three types of cultural value: intrinsic value, instrumental value and institutional value. It focuses on how arts engagement creates, supports and extends factors such as well-being, social inclusion and educational achievement. This book provides an innovative examination of the evidence from Australian projects depicting the impact of the arts on a range of indicators and sectors.

"This edited collection explores methods for conducting critical empirical research examining the potential impacts of theatrical events on audience members. Dani Snyder-Young and Matt Omasta present an overview of the burgeoning subfield of audience studies in theatre and performance studies, followed by an introduction to the wide range of ways scholars can study the experiences of spectators. Consisting of chapter length case studies, the book addresses methodologies for examining spectatorship, including qualitative, quantitative, historical/historiographic, arts-based, participatory, and mixed methods approaches. This volume will be of great interest to theatre and performance studies scholars as well as industry professionals working in marketing, audience development and community engagement"--
