"The literary scholar Alfrum Kliems explores the aesthetic strategies of Eastern European underground literature, art, film and music in the decades before and after the fall of communism, ranging from the 'father' of Prague Underground, Egon Bondy, to the neo-dada Club of Polish Losers in Berlin. The works she considers are 'underground' in the sense that they were produced illegally, or were received as subversive after the regimes had fallen. Her study challenges common notions of 'Underground' as an umbrella term for nonconformism. Rather, it depicts it as a sociopoetic reflection of modernity, intimately linked to urban settings, with tropes and aesthetic procedures related to Surrealism, Dadaism, Expressionism, and, above all, pop and counterculture. The author discusses these commonalities and distinctions in Czech, Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian, and German authors, musicians, and filmmakers. She identifies intertextual relations across languages and generations, and situates her findings in a transatlantic context (including the Beat Generation, Susan Sontag, Neil Young) and the historical framework of Romanticism and modernity (including Baudelaire and Brecht). Despite this wide brief, the book never loses sight of its core message: Underground is no arbitrary expression of discontent, but rather the result of a fundamental conflict at the socio-philosophical roots of modernity"--

« C'était à Mégara, faubourg de Carthage, dans les jardins d'Hamilcar. » La première phrase de Salammbô, roman de Gustave Flaubert publié en 1862, a marqué pour des générations de lecteurs le début d'une expérience unique. Dans une tentative démiurgique de restituer la cité perdue, l'écrivain met en scène les passions humaines et donne naissance à un tourbillon d'images et de sensations qui déchaîneront l'imaginaire des artistes de la fin du XIXe siècle jusqu'à nos jours. Peintres, sculpteurs, photographes, musiciens, cinéastes, auteurs de bande dessinée : tous s'emparent de Salammbô pour transposer les mots que Flaubert ne voulait pourtant pas voir illustrés. A l'occasion du bicentenaire de la naissance de l'écrivain, cet ouvrage et l'exposition qu'il accompagne entreprennent de révéler la portée considérable de ce chef-d'œuvre de la littérature moderne et son héritage dans l'histoire de la Méditerranée.

In 1980 an exhibition of the Illuminated Manuscripts of René Char held in Paris took the artistic and literary worlds by surprise. It featured illustrations by twenty-eight artists of an array of Char’s hand-written poems. Char’s artistic associations, spanning seven decades, remain remarkable today. Not only was he amply illustrated by those he called his “substantial allies”; the dedicatory poems and prose pieces they inspired, written with revelatory flair, constitute a unique corpus in the history of art and poetic enterprise. This book brings together an exemplary number of the artists Char prized over time: Dali and Kandinsky in the early years; later, Picasso, Braque and Miró; yet later, Vieira da Silva, Nicolas de Staël and Alexandre Galperine. It also considers the poet’s fascination with Corot, Courbet, La Tour, Van Gogh and the cave art of Lascaux.
