Islomania is a recognized affliction. But what is it about islands that is so alluring, and why do so many people find these self-contained worlds completely irresistible? Utopia and Atlantis were islands, and islands have captured the imaginations of writers and artists for centuries. Venetian sailors were the first to make collections of them by drawing maps of those they visited in their isolari - literally the "island books". Then in 1719 Daniel Defoe published his tale of a castaway on a desert island, 'Robinson Crusoe', one of the first great novels in the history of literature and an instant bestseller. Defoe's tale combined the real and the imagined and transformed them into a compelling creative landscape, establishing a whole literary genre and unleashing the power of an island for storytelling. To celebrate the tercentenary of Robinson Crusoe's publication, a truly international range of leading illustrators imagine they too have been washed up on their own remote island. In a specially created map they visualize what it looks like, what it's called and what can be found on its mythical shores. In a panoply of astonishingly creative and often surprising responses, we are invited to explore a curious and fabulous archipelago of islands of invention that will beguile illustrators, cartographers and dreamers alike.

Une étude comparée des cartes locales en Europe au Moyen Âge et à la Renaissance à travers un ensemble de textes rédigés par les meilleurs spécialistes du sujet.Si l'existence de cartes locales est attestée en Europe dès le haut Moyen Âge en Occident, leur nombre augmente considérablement au XVe et au XVIe siècle. Elles deviennent alors un instrument courant de gouvernance, répondant à des usages juridiques, administratifs, politiques, ecclésiastiques et économiques, pour des commanditaires variés : cours de justice, seigneurs, conseils urbains, princes, communautés d'habitants ou même simples particuliers. Elles sont souvent dessinées par des peintres, mais aussi par des clercs et des notaires, des savants et des arpenteurs, qui jouissent d'une grande liberté formelle puisque les canons de la cartographie dite " moderne " ne sont pas encore définis à cette époque. Ces premières cartes locales marquent ainsi une étape fondatrice dans l'histoire de la cartographie.Pourtant, ces riches images restent peu connues et peu publiées. Fruit de travaux engagés à l'occasion d'une exposition aux Archives nationales en 2019 qui présentait des cartes locales issues des collections françaises (Quand les artistes dessinaient les cartes, coédition Le Passage/Archives nationales), le présent ouvrage se propose de mettre en évidence l'ampleur de ce corpus et d'engager une étude comparée de celui-ci à l'échelle européenne, à travers un ensemble de textes rédigés par les meilleurs spécialistes du sujet.

From Guy Debord in the early 1950s to Richard Long, Janet Cardiff, and Esther Polak more recently, contemporary artists have returned again and again to the walking motif. Today, the convergence of global networks, online databases, and new tools for mobile mapping coincides with a resurgence of interest in walking as an art form. In Walking and Mapping, Karen O'Rourke explores a series of walking/mapping projects by contemporary artists. She offers close readings of these projects -- many of which she was able to experience firsthand -- and situates them in relation to landmark works from the past half-century. Together, they form a new entity, a dynamic whole greater than the sum of its parts. By alternating close study of selected projects with a broader view of their place in a bigger picture, Walking and Mapping itself maps a complex phenomenon.
