David Small groeit op in een gezin waarin iedereen een eigen taal spreekt: zijn moeder zucht voortdurend en slaat de keukenkastjes hard dicht, zijn oudste broer drumt, zijn vader slaat op een boksbal. Onuitgesproken geweld vormt een belangrijk deel in de opvoeding van de jonge David.In Stitches vertelt hij op aangrijpende wijze over hoe de terreur in huis met de jaren alleen maar toeneemt. Zelfs zijn oma, een tragische vrouw die religie en noodlot op hardhandige wijze met elkaar verknoopt, verspilt geen overbodige liefde aan de jongen.Het is haast ondraaglijk om toe te moeten zien hoe wreed mensen ? ouders en kinderen in dit geval ? met elkaar omgaan, wat een kind moet doorstaan: als Small tien jaar is, groeit er een cyste in zijn nek, maar zijn ouders zijn te gepreoccupeerd met zichzelf om er aandacht aan te besteden, hoewel vrienden van de familie hen smeken ernaar te laten kijken. Pas op zijn veertiende ondergaat David een operatie en blijkt het om een kankergezwel te gaan. Een tweede, zware operatie laat hem zonder stem en ook fysiek gehandicapt achter.Onsentimenteel en onbarmhartig wordt het verhaal kaler en kaler, de pagina's leger en leger.
