Andy Goldsworthy est un artiste mondialement reconnu pour son travail éphémère et permanent avec la nature, le land art. Il y a 16 ans, de sa rencontre avec le réalisateur Thomas Riedelsheimer est né le succès mondial Rivers and Tides. Entre 2013 et 2016, les deux hommes sont repartis à l'aventure. On découvre comment Andy Goldsworthy s'introduit lui même dans ses oeuvres, comment son travail devient à la fois plus fragile et plus personnel, plus sévère et plus difficile, incorporant des machineries massives et des équipes importantes sur de plus gros projets. Penché dans le vent est un voyage créatif qui nous mène d'Edimbourg à la réserve d'Ibitipoca au Brésil, du sud de la France à la Nouvelle-Angleterre.

Au cœur de certains des plus importants jardins du XVIe siècle se dressaient des monticules artificiels représentant le Parnasse. L’artéfact de la fausse montagne sera par la suite décliné en de multiples occasions et sous des formes pour le moins inattendues, aussi bien dans le cadre des festivités baroques, avec leurs montagnes éphémères, que lors des cérémonies de la Grande Révolution qui réunirent d’immenses foules autour de fausses montagnes dédiées à l’Être Suprême. Volcan factice, pyramide initiatique, monticule pittoresque imitant la Nature, amas de déchets ou cime ultratechnique des parcs d’attractions contemporains, la montagne artificielle a traversé les siècles. En s’intéressant aux variations de cette construction hautement symbolique, Michael Jakob propose un parcours passionnant à travers un paysage où chaque éminence est autant une masse de matière architecturée que le réceptacle signifiant des enjeux majeurs de son époque.

Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, dividing and connecting humans, who carry saltwater in their blood, sweat and tears. They also represent a powerful nonhuman force, rising, flooding, heating and raging in unprecedented ways as the climate crisis unfolds. Artists have envisioned the sea as a sublime wilderness, home to mythical creatures and bizarre species, a source of life and death, a site of new beginnings and tragic endings, both wondrous and disastrous. From migration to melting ice caps, the sea is omnipresent in international news and politics, leaking into popular culture and proliferating in recent art and exhibitions. Dance's galvanizing and transformative presence in art and theory over the last decade becomes part of a broader investigation of its dialogue with modernism's legacies. This collection surveys the choreographic turn in the artistic imagination from the 1950s onwards, and in doing so outlines the philosophies of movement instrumental to the development of experimental dance. By introducing and discussing the concepts of embodiment and corporeality, choreopolitics, and the notion of dance in an expanded field, Dance establishes the aesthetics and politics of dance as a major impetus in contemporary culture. It offers testimonies and writings by influential visual artists whose work has taken inspiration from dance and choreography. Dance because of its ephemerality, corporeality, precariousness, scoring, and performativity is arguably the art form that most clearly engages the politics of aesthetics in contemporary culture. Dance's ephemerality suggests the possibility of an escape from the regimes of commodification and fetishization in the arts. Its corporeality can embody critiques of representation inscribed in bodies and subjects. Its precariousness underlines the fragility of contemporary states of being. Scoring links it with conceptual art, as language becomes the articulator for possible as well as impossible modes of action. Finally, because dance always establishes a contract, or promise, between its choreographic planning and its actualization in movement, it reveals an essential performativity in its aesthetic project—a central concern for both art and critical thought in our time.
