This is the first book to look at an increasingly popular form of street art: the paste-up or ""wheatie."" Many street artists don't graffiti or stencil any more but use pre-prepared paper images that can be taken down, thereby avoiding a vandalism charge. The book shows the work of 20 artists, with photographs of their work, an article about their work, and a fold-out paste-up. The fold-out pages are perforated so they can easily be removed. Das vorliegende Buch präsentiert eine neue Analyse der Verbindungen zwischen dem Kunstgenre Graffiti und dem Werk Jean-Michel Basquiats und spricht insofern sicherlich ein breites Publikum an. Es gibt gegenwärtig nur äußerst wenige Studien zu dieser Thematik, was diese originelle Analyse umso wichtiger macht. Der Autor analysiert den vergleichbaren Hintergrund der Graffiti-Künstler und Basquiats, hebt gleichzeitig jedoch auch die Unterschiede hervor, die Basquiat internationale Berühmtheit verschafften, während der Großteil der Graffiti-Künstler anonym geblieben ist.

La multiplication des espaces publics dans les projets urbains conduit à une génération d'oeuvres destinées à l'espace public de plus en plus diversifiées. L'accroissement des propositions s'enrichit d'une grande disparité des pratiques artistiques, d'une porosité des disciplines, mais est aussi accéléré par un éventail grandissant des commanditaires et un développement du curatoriat. Phénomène social, économique, artistique, la prodigalité de ces espaces d'art public est aussi la conséquence de l'intérêt qu'ont porté les chercheurs en sciences sociales à l'espace public qui, en tant que concept, continue d'assurer un rôle essentiel de distanciation et de rassemblement, de réflexion et d'échange. Une lente mais sûre symbiose de l'entertainment et du social rejoint la représentation de la démocratie vendue comme une image de bien être et de réussite sociale. Conscients de cette dérive, des artistes inventent toutes sortes de lignes tangentielles aux représentations coagulées de l'art et de l'espace public afin de détricoter leur union et de trouver parmi les bris de leur défaite des interstices par où passera l'ébauche ou la promesse d'un espace public actualisé par ses usagers.
