Riapre al pubblico dopo più di trent'anni Santa Maria Antiqua, la basilica nel Foro Romano scoperta nel 1900 alle pendici del Palatino. La chiesa conserva sulle sue pareti un patrimonio di pitture unico nel mondo cristiano del primo millennio, databile dal VI al IX secolo. Resta eccezionale testimonianza nello sviluppo della pittura non solo romana, ma di tutto il mondo greco bizantino contemporaneo: l'iconoclastia, infatti, cancellò gran parte delle immagini sacre di quell'epoca. Chiusa dagli anni ottanta per un complesso intervento architettonico proseguito con il restauro delle pitture, alla riapertura della chiesa si accompagna la mostra "Santa Maria Antiqua. Tra Roma e Bisanzio" promossa dalla Soprintendenza Speciale per il Colosseo, il Museo Nazionale Romano e l'Area Archeologica di Roma con Electa. L'esposizione è "mostra" del monumento stesso, perché gravita intorno al ruolo che l'edificio, con i suoi dipinti, ha giocato nell'area del Foro Romano post-classico cristianizzato e al rapporto con la Roma altomedioevale.

Il volume è il catalogo della mostra di Rimini (Castel Sismondo, 13 marzo - 4 settembre 2005). Il percorso espositivo ha inizio con un inquadramento storico e geografico del contesto politico da cui emergono Costantino e i suoi successori. Un'ampia sezione è dedicata alla svolta politica e religiosa seguita alla battaglia di ponte Milvio, nel 312, con la quale Costantino conquistò Roma. La famosa visione che precedette lo scontro è riassunta nell'iconografia imperiale del cristogramma che ebbe subito grande diffusione per il suo fortissimo significato. Le novità di quest'epoca si colgono perfettamente nell'architettura, con la nascita della basilica cristiana a più navate, e nell'arte figurativa, rappresentata da pitture, rilievi e ritratti.
